THE SPECIALS & ACE FACE
The Specials asked Ace Face to supply them with our tonic suits for their tour in April & May.
On a scale of 1 to 10 of how excited we are were to be associated with The Specials, then it's got to be an 11. The Specials are THE iconic band of Ska and as you know, are also one of the most influential British bands, ever. This is an amazing thing to happen to our company and we are very, very happy.
We've also kitted out Madness, The Dub Pistols & The Dualers and The Communicators. They heard that we were the only place to go to to get a proper two-tone tonic suit.
So this is what we do... We make made-to-measure and Savile Row bespoke TONIC material suits. This is the PROPER, TWO-TONE, IRIDESCENT tonic worn by the Mods in the 60's.
We have searched out archived tonic and put the same material back into production. It's the wool/mohair mix that is the real deal stuff. It's not like the other 'tonic' on offer elsewhere - it's not silkine and it's not mixed with black. It's the genuine pups nuts. Check out our testimonials page on our website www.acefaceclothingcompany.com, there is nothing better than praise coming straight from the horses mouth. Here's one you can read now...
'The Dub Pistols have been heavily influenced from the sounds of Two Tone, Reggae, Ska, Hip Hop and Electronica we love fusing the old with the new trying to mix diferent genres and styles, however when it came to dressing the band we didnt want to mix it up we wanted to have the classic look that only Ace Face are offering, the suits are the best we have seen and stay true to the original tonics we all used to dream of owning but were unable to source, Its great watching the band transform as they get ready for the shows, as soon as the suits are on the swagger and confidence starts to flow and we're are ready to hit the stage.' Jason O'Bryan (Dub Pistols)
You can also request all our tonic swatches from our site. But if you live in the South East then you can (by appointment) go see Marc in Sackville Street or come along to one of our fortnightly Saturday Clubs at our home office in Surrey. Just for the record - we do not sell the just fabric, sorry if you're another tailor. Oh yes, we don't make suits for any other companies, so if you see an 'Ace Face tonic suit' advertised by someone else, it ain't one of ours!! The fabric isn't made in China to quash that rumour, we have it made by a UK mill exclusively for our company only. So an Ace Face really is exclusive.
Our suits are made in Britain, not in a sweat shop; the material is made in Britain so it's superior quality, and our tailors including Mr Bespoke himself, Marc Griffiths, are top dollar.
So who are Ace Face?
Three guys, mates from school some 25 years ago, who each wanted a tonic suit, started up Ace Face after spending five years searching for real tonic fabric. At the point of giving up and over a few pints, they had a brain wave – if no one was making tonic, then why not put it back into production? They mulled the idea over, spoke to people to find out their opinions (mainly down the pub) and when the feedback was really positive they set up Ace Face and set out to put tonic back onto the fashion map.
Of course it does help when venturing into the fashion world that one of you is a Savile Row tailor. Ace Face’s Creative Director, Marc Griffith is one such tailor. His knowledge of the business enables Ace Face to offer high quality made to measure suits that are made in Britain. Keeping the suits 100% British was an important factor for Marc, “Mods are quintessentially British and as Britain has such a great tailoring pedigree, coupled with our textile & fabric heritage it was important that the essence of Ace Face was British. So much manufacturing is flogged off abroad because it’s cheap – we just didn’t want to be that sort of company”.
Stuart Murray brings his business head to the Ace Face mix. With over twenty year’s sales experience and several businesses under his belt, Stuart is in no way the boring ‘suit’ of Ace Face. In contrary, he often recounts his stories of ‘daring dos’ when he was a dandy Skinhead (his words) to any available audience on a Saturday night. Sunday mornings follow with ‘Liquidator’ and Judge Dread blasting out of his Jukebox into the Surrey countryside. As a teenager Stuart began his love of fashion with smart Crombie coats, polished Loakes, braces and a grade two. A look that he still, to some extent, still embraces! Stuart’s ethos for Ace Face is “to bring back the spirit of tonic into the present day for his generation, and to introduce tonic to the younger generation”
And finally Gary Robinson, a true entrepreneur who ditched the braces and DM’s some time ago for a more relaxed life in Somerset. Gary brings relaxed karma and a gift for turning his hand to a variety of things, which annoyingly he always does very well! Excited by the prospect of reintroducing true tonic to the fashion market Gary says “It’s fantastic that we’ve been able to source original tonic material and have the means to bring it to market. The initial interest in Ace Face has been astounding – we couldn’t get the fabric made quick enough”. Other than being a forty-year-old ex-Mod, Gary’s other passion is Jaguars – that’s the cars, not the cats.
