Microbes such as the yeast we commonly use in baking bread & fermenting beer are now being engineered to produce the next generation of bio-fuels. Jay Keasling, the University of California, Berkeley, is leading a team of scientists in an effort to manipulate the chemistry within bacteria so they will produce fuel from sugar.
Unlike ethanol, which is produced largely from grains, these bio-fuels would be developed from plant cell walls (lignocellulose), an abundant, and as yet untapped, resource. Energy from the sun is stored by plants in long polymers of sugar such as cellulose, hemicellulose & lignin, which make up the plant cell walls. Before they can be fermented into fuel, these sugars need to be broken down into simpler sugars, something that can be done using natural enzymes found in microbes.

Swine Flu Infects Children 14 Times More Than Elderly
Children were 14 times more likely to be sickened by swine flu than adults 60 and older, the age group that is typically the most at risk for influenza, according to a U.S. study of the disease. Children ages 5 to 14 became ill with swine flu, also known as H1N1, at a rate of 147 per 100,000 people, according to the study of 1,557 confirmed illnesses, including seven deaths, in Chicago from April to July, months when the flu virus usually doesn’t spread. The findings were reported today by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. U.S. health officials are planning a vaccination campaign that will focus on those who are disproportionately affected by H1N1, which include children, pregnant women and adults with underlying health conditions. A separate CDC study released today from New Zealand showed swine flu targeted younger people and dominated other virus strains after circulating for just one month during the winter, when influenza is more active. Like other Southern Hemisphere countries with temperate climates, New Zealand entered its winter season with co- circulation of both seasonal and 2009 pandemic influenza strains. The number of viruses identified as 2009 pandemic influenza rapidly overtook the number identified as seasonal influenza. In New Zealand, the number of patients with flu symptoms who sought medical attention was 1,518 doctor visits for every 100,000 people from May 3 to Aug. 2, according to the report by the CDC.Aug 25 2009 1:09 AM
Swine Flu May Cause 90,000 U.S. Deaths, Report Says.?
Swine flu may infect half the U.S. population this year, hospitalize 1.8 million patients and lead to as many as 90,000 deaths, more than twice the number killed in a typical seasonal flu. today was urged to speed vaccine production and name a senior member of the White House staff, preferably the homeland security adviser, to take responsibility for decision-making on the pandemic. Initial doses should be accelerated to mid-September to vaccinate as many as 40 million people, the advisory group said. Seasonal flu usually kills about 36,000 American. Swine flu, also called H1N1, causes more severe illness needing hospitalization among younger people than seasonal flu, while leaving people 65 and older relatively unscathed. The 2009 H1N1 virus will cause a more serious threat this fall. We won’t know until we’re in the middle of the flu season how serious the threat is, but because it’s a new strain, it’s likely to infect more people than usual. Data from clinical trials to assess the safety and effectiveness of swine flu vaccines will start to become available in mid-September, health officials reported Aug. 21. Full results from the two-dose trials won’t be available until mid October. According to what the advisory report describes as a “plausible scenario,” 30 percent to 50 percent of the country’s population will be infected in the fall and winter. As many as 300,000 patients may be treated in hospital intensive care units, filling 50 percent to 100 percent of the available beds, and 30,000 to 90,000 people may die.Aug 25 2009 1:07 AM

Updated federal guidelines offer state and local public health and school officials a range of options for responding to 2009 H1N1 influenza in schools, depending on how severe the flu may be in their communities. The guidance says officials should balance the risk of flu in their communities with the disruption, potential safety risks, and other consequences that school dismissals could cause in education and the wider community. The guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was announced today at a joint news conference by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, and CDC Director Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. The school guidance is a part of a broader national framework to respond to novel H1N1 influenza, which includes encouraging people to be vaccinated against the virus and to take other actions to avoid infection. The CDC anticipates more illness after the school year starts, because flu typically is transmitted more easily in the fall and winter.<font size="undefi</div>

Many political observers have bemoaned the effect of the Christian Right on democratic virtues. that the moaning is mostly without cause. One interviewed the leaders of 30 Christian Right organizations, studied their literature, and attended their training sessions. What was discovered was that these leaders work diligently to teach activists to practice civility and dialogue, and to reject appeals to Scripture in the public square. and about this findings.
A lot of our impressions of the Right have been driven by the media, which tend to focus on the most strident, militant types. I've tried to uncover the activism that goes on below the media radar. It's where the most action is, ironically.
Abortion among other religious issues really commands far more energy and interest in that world than any other issues out there. Whatever other issue is second, it's a really distant second. If abortion weren't an issue, there would be almost no Christian Right, or it would be such a marginal thing that it wouldn't command that much interest.
I think it's huge. The Operation Rescue movement began in a very peaceful way and generated almost no media attention. But people like many religious leaders had discovered that you could get media attention if you were outrageous and combative. So it really dominated coverage of the Christian Right and the pro-life movement, particularly in the late 1980s and early '90s. It had a formative influence on how the media see the Right. There's just not much interest in covering crisis pregnancy cente

i can not help paying attention to employers pushing seniors away from eccepting them as reliable employee's. i am looking for work after retirement, i find the doors shut in my face when i ask for an application or inquire about a job, i can almost feel employers discriminate against us seniors. i can not lie and say i can lift heavy objests, or stand on my feel long hours without sitting for few minutes. all i want is a simple oppertunity, a job that i can be happy doing, i like many things, often i see there is no point of asking any more. i like my freedom now that i am retired senior, i choose as i can go anywhere and stay outdoors as long i can possibly can. but i enjoy being productive like i used to. i am still volunteering , without doubts i love being there, doing things, being usefull. but i want to make some extra money, and that's where i find it difficult to achieve. do you see why i need to be part of your organization?.. i feel good when i see people needing my help. i can not tell you how happy i am getting to know you, the things you are doing and i am happy i ran into you.

sorry again.. the continue from post below..seniors driving
it have shown that when the exercise used properly, the program can help drivers see more, think faster and cut crash risk by up to 50 percent. The exercise feels like had to remember which type of vehicle a truck or a car appeared on the screen then quickly re-act. The next step required simultaneously keeping track of both types of vehicle and where a second vehicle was positioned in eight possible locations. It can be fun, but to seniors tougher is to be expected. focused more when realized how quickly the images came and went, remembering, By the end of the four or five minute exercises, reaction time can be faster and more accurate. But do these kinds of programs actually work when you are behind the wheel? there is training that can be done to improve one’s abilities related to driving. We all think we are excellent drivers even when we are not Most people do not think about the day when they can no longer drive safely, but it is definitely something young and seniors alike, individually or in group, and as a nation need to prepare for now with a committed non profit organization like your self.

Certainly some of the worry is warranted. But let us not allow that worry to stop us from seizing this opportunity to come out of this stronger, and more sustainable. We owe that to the people we are working so hard to serve.Jul 17 2009 1:51 AM
Many non-profits are struggling financially in this troubled economy. Others have had to make hard decisions about their futures. This year, the Nonprofit Finance Fund conducted a survey of nearly 1,000 non-profit organizations and found that half expected the recession to have a long-term or permanent negative effect on their organizations.
But non-profit organizations should go further. This time of uncertainty could be an opportunity for non-profits to strengthen & come out stronger on the other side.
Collaboration is about working together to achieve a common mission or goal, and it involves the sharing of resources such as time, staff or space. While the initial time input to establish these collaborations is high, the long-term impact may be a stronger program and a reduced cost to each organization.
A critical look at expenses and services: The soaring cost of health care in America today creates an additional expense burden on heath-related non-profits. However, other expenses can also expand during times of plenty, and our current economic climate offers an opportunity to look for these areas of excess. Non-profits may look at increasing the use of email rather than print materials, consider asking for donated items rather than purchasing, or bulk purchasing where possible. It is also a time to look carefully at the services being offered.
