The New Science of Learning..According to recent studies, young children learn best through social interaction, studying an emerging field called the "Science of Learning," which re-evaluates how children learn in formal and informal settings. We're finding that social aspects of learning are very important at all ages that this is especially the case for young children who learn most rapidly and most effectively from other people. Infants & young children learn from imitation and by following the actions of those around them, adopting mannerisms and speech patterns. Yet technology, such as television and computers, is changing how children learn & communicate, often replacing face-to-face human interaction. A study compared the effectiveness of television and audio programs to live human interaction when learning a second language. Nine-month-old American children were exposed to Chinese by using three approaches: an auditory soundtrack, a DVD with picture and sound, and live human interaction while playing and reading books. The goal was to see which one of these approaches allowed the children to learn best. The results were that the American children who interacted with a live tutor quickly learned

    New Generation of Fuel:.

Microbes such as the yeast we commonly use in baking bread  & fermenting beer are now being engineered to produce the next generation of bio-fuels. Jay Keasling,  the University of California, Berkeley, is leading a team of scientists in an effort to manipulate the chemistry within bacteria so they will produce fuel from sugar.

Unlike ethanol, which is produced largely from grains, these bio-fuels would be developed from plant cell walls (lignocellulose), an abundant, and as yet untapped, resource. Energy from the sun is stored by plants in long polymers of sugar such as cellulose, hemicellulose  & lignin, which make up the plant cell walls. Before they can be fermented into fuel, these sugars need to be broken down into simpler sugars, something that can be done using natural enzymes found in microbes.

LOOOOOOOK AT THIS..High school completion rates peaked in 1969 at 77.1 percent and have gradually declined to 69.9 percent Barton 2005, The earning power of individuals with less than a high school education (and even of high school graduates) has fallen continuously over the last several decades. In 1971, male dropouts working full-time earned $35,087 (in 2002 dollars). By 2002, this figure had fallen 35 percent, to $23,903. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in its publication, Occupational Outlook, Winter 2004-2005, when an occupation has workers with different levels of education, the worker with more education is better able to compete for the job. The Outlook goes on to describe how individuals with a high school degree and some college or vocational training are more likely to be hired, to earn more when they start a job and ov

Fired U.S. Workers Seek Health Plans as Subsidy Wanes

Unemployed workers facing the end of a U.S. subsidy that pays 65 percent of their group health insurance premiums may be forced to find individual policies. Those who need it most might not qualify. U.S. workers who lose their jobs can remain on their employer’s health plan for as long as 18 months under the 1986 law known as Cobra. Workers typically pay the entire cost of the premium, plus a 2 percent administrative fee. The economic stimulus plan passed in February included a $24.7 billion subsidy to reduce health-care costs for the growing number of fired workers. It covers 65 percent of a monthly Cobra premium for up to nine months.  Cobra enrollments have doubled since the subsidy began,  It’s available for employees who lost their job from Sept. 1, 2008, through Dec. 31, 2009. The estimates about 7 million people will use it for some part of 2009. Employees of companies that went out of business or had fewer than 20 workers may not be eligible, according to the Department of Labor. The subsidy phases out for taxpayers with an adjusted gross income above $125,000 for an individual and $250,000 for those filing jointly.

Swine Flu Infects Children 14 Times More Than Elderly

Children were 14 times more likely to be sickened by swine flu than adults 60 and older, the age group that is typically the most at risk for influenza, according to a U.S. study of the disease. Children ages 5 to 14 became ill with swine flu, also known as H1N1, at a rate of 147 per 100,000 people, according to the study of 1,557 confirmed illnesses, including seven deaths, in Chicago from April to July, months when the flu virus usually doesn’t spread. The findings were reported today by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. U.S. health officials are planning a vaccination campaign that will focus on those who are disproportionately affected by H1N1, which include children, pregnant women and adults with underlying health conditions. A separate CDC study released today from New Zealand showed swine flu targeted younger people and dominated other virus strains after circulating for just one month during the winter, when influenza is more active. Like other Southern Hemisphere countries with temperate climates, New Zealand entered its winter season with co- circulation of both seasonal and 2009 pandemic influenza strains. The number of viruses identified as 2009 pandemic influenza rapidly overtook the number identified as seasonal influenza. In New Zealand, the number of patients with flu symptoms who sought medical attention was 1,518 doctor visits for every 100,000 people from May 3 to Aug. 2, according to the report by the CDC.

Swine Flu May Cause 90,000 U.S. Deaths, Report Says.?

Swine flu may infect half the U.S. population this year, hospitalize 1.8 million patients and lead to as many as 90,000 deaths, more than twice the number killed in a typical seasonal flu. today was urged to speed vaccine production and name a senior member of the White House staff, preferably the homeland security adviser, to take responsibility for decision-making on the pandemic. Initial doses should be accelerated to mid-September to vaccinate as many as 40 million people, the advisory group said. Seasonal flu usually kills about 36,000 American. Swine flu, also called H1N1, causes more severe illness needing hospitalization among younger people than seasonal flu, while leaving people 65 and older relatively unscathed. The 2009 H1N1 virus will cause a more serious threat this fall. We won’t know until we’re in the middle of the flu season how serious the threat is, but because it’s a new strain, it’s likely to infect more people than usual. Data from clinical trials to assess the safety and effectiveness of swine flu vaccines will start to become available in mid-September, health officials reported Aug. 21. Full results from the two-dose trials won’t be available until mid October. According to what the advisory report describes as a “plausible scenario,” 30 percent to 50 percent of the country’s population will be infected in the fall and winter. As many as 300,000 patients may be treated in hospital intensive care units, filling 50 percent to 100 percent of the available beds, and 30,000 to 90,000 people may die.

second half of swineflue: given that swine-flu outbreaks in 1968 and 1957 failed to cause as many deaths, even with medical technology and disease surveillance less advanced than today. Influenza, you can make all the predictions you want, but it’s more difficult than predicting the weather.  Gross said in a telephone interview today, after the advisory report was made public. “If influenza was a stock, I wouldn’t touch it. The 775-bed hospital is planning for an outbreak, upping its order of flu medications and discussing where to put patients if the worst occurs. . The 21-member group of scientists and engineers, created by Congress in 1976, advises the president on policy involving scientific matters. H1N1 has already reached more than 170 countries and territories in the four months since being identified, the Geneva-based World Health Organization said. Swine flu causes similar symptoms as seasonal strains. It has so far resulted in worse than normal flu seasons, with increased hospitalizations and cases of severe illness, the WHO said in an Aug. 12 release. The median age of those with the pandemic virus has been 12 to 17 years, the WHO said on July 24, citing data from Canada, Chile, Japan, U.K. and the U.S. People who get infected with this strain happen to be the healthiest members of our society. said Shaw, associate director of laboratory science at the CDC’s flu division, in a presentation today, also at the agency’s offices. The H1N1 strain is genetically related to the 1918 Spanish Flu strain that killed an estimated 50 million people. Variations of the Spanish Flu strain circulated widely until around 1957, when they were pushed aside by other flu strains.

I CAME ACROSS THIS JUST IN TIME FOR SCHOOL REGISTRATION... Updated Federal Guidelines for 2009 H1N1 Flu in Schools Offer Many Options

Updated federal guidelines offer state and local public health and school officials a range of options for responding to 2009 H1N1 influenza in schools, depending on how severe the flu may be in their communities. The guidance says officials should balance the risk of flu in their communities with the disruption, potential safety risks, and other consequences that school dismissals could cause in education and the wider community. The guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was announced today at a joint news conference by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, and CDC Director Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. The school guidance is a part of a broader national framework to respond to novel H1N1 influenza, which includes encouraging people to be vaccinated against the virus and to take other actions to avoid infection. The CDC anticipates more illness after the school year starts, because flu typically is transmitted more easily in the fall and winter.

Several state health departments, CDC, and the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections. On June 24, FSIS issued a notice about a recall of 41,280 pounds of beef products from JBS Swift Beef Company that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. On June 28, the recall was expanded to include 380,000 pounds of assorted pieces of beef (beef primal products) from the same company. Health officials in several states who were investigating reports of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses found that most ill persons had consumed ground beef, and many reported that it was undercooked. At least some of the illnesses appear to be associated with products subject to these recalls. Samples from unopened packages of ground beef recovered from a patient's home were tested by the Michigan Public Health Laboratory yielded an E. coli O157:H7 isolate that matched the "DNA fingerprint" of the outbreak strain.Twenty three persons infected with a strain of E. coli O157:H7 with a particular "DNA fingerprint" have been reported from 9 states. Of these, 17 have been confirmed by an advanced DNA test as having the outbreak strain; confirmatory tests are pending on others. The number of ill persons identified in each state is as follows: California (4), Maine (1), Michigan (6), Minnesota (1), New Hampshire (1), New Jersey (2), New Mexico (1), New York (1) and Wisconsin (6).

i want your attention on this..importand: SECOND PART...
Improved hygiene and control measures, access to antibiotics and knowledge about how the disease spreads has limited the number of reported infections worldwide to about 2,000 a year, of which about 250 are fatal.
it is so important to teach hygiene.

Many political observers have bemoaned the effect of the Christian Right on democratic virtues. that the moaning is mostly without cause. One interviewed the leaders of 30 Christian Right organizations, studied their literature, and attended their training sessions. What was discovered was that these leaders work diligently to teach activists to practice civility and dialogue, and to reject appeals to Scripture in the public square. and about this findings.

A lot of our impressions of the Right have been driven by the media, which tend to focus on the most strident, militant types. I've tried to uncover the activism that goes on below the media radar. It's where the most action is, ironically.

Abortion among other religious issues really commands far more energy and interest in that world than any other issues out there. Whatever other issue is second, it's a really distant second. If abortion weren't an issue, there would be almost no Christian Right, or it would be such a marginal thing that it wouldn't command that much interest.

I think it's huge. The Operation Rescue movement began in a very peaceful way and generated almost no media attention. But people like many religious leaders had discovered that you could get media attention if you were outrageous and combative. So it really dominated coverage of the Christian Right and the pro-life movement, particularly in the late 1980s and early '90s. It had a formative influence on how the media see the Right. There's just not much interest in covering crisis pregnancy cente

why cann't seniors be part of the workforce after 65?
i can not help paying attention to employers pushing seniors away from eccepting them as reliable employee's. i am looking for work after retirement, i find the doors shut in my face when i ask for an application or inquire about a job, i can almost feel employers discriminate against us seniors. i can not lie and say i can lift heavy objests, or stand on my feel long hours without sitting for few minutes. all i want is a simple oppertunity, a job that i can be happy doing, i like many things, often i see there is no point of asking any more. i like my freedom now that i am retired senior,  i choose as i can go anywhere and stay outdoors as long i can possibly can. but i enjoy being productive like i used to. i am still volunteering , without doubts i love being there, doing things, being usefull. but i want to make some extra money, and that's where i find it difficult to achieve. do you see why i need to be part of your organization?.. i feel good when i see people needing my help. i can not tell you how happy i am getting to know you, the things you are doing and i am happy i ran into you.

sorry again.. the continue from  post below..seniors driving

it have shown that when the exercise  used properly, the program can help drivers see more, think faster and cut crash risk by up to 50 percent. The exercise feels like had to remember which type of vehicle a truck or a car appeared on the screen then quickly re-act. The next step required simultaneously keeping track of both types of vehicle and where a second vehicle was positioned in eight possible locations. It can be fun, but to seniors tougher is to be expected.  focused more when  realized how quickly the images came and went, remembering, By the end of the four or five minute exercises,  reaction time can be faster and more accurate. But do these kinds of programs actually work when you are behind the wheel? there is training that can be done to improve one’s abilities related to driving. We all think we are excellent drivers even when we are not Most people do not think about the day when they can no longer drive safely, but it is definitely something young and seniors alike, individually or in group, and as a nation need to prepare for now with a committed non profit organization like your self.

How elderly  Keep Their Driving Skills

According to Census projections, next year there will be 39 million Americans aged 65 years or older. And that number will jump to 69 million by 2030, which means more older drivers. By 2025, one-quarter of Americans will be considered elderly, said Peter Kissinger, president and chief executive of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a not-for-profit research and educational organization.
We may be wiser drivers when we’re older with help of a non profit organization educating seniors, but declining abilities can put us at risk.  Aging can slow physical and mental abilities that affect driving reaction time, night vision, peripheral vision, complex decision-making like turning at intersections and concentration.
A new computer program designed to help older people drive more safely can be available and trusted by seniors if a non profit organization makes it available. The software, hardware and computers can be helpful to  Baby Boomers retrain their brains and delay the impact of aging.
Most people buy into the use-it-or-lose-it philosophy with respect to physical abilities. But the bottom line is, it’s the same thing with the brain the most important muscle in your body.
The idea consists of two interactive exercises designed to improve focus, reaction time and memory, and increase visual processing speed and the ability to track multiple objects, like cars at a busy intersection. But the game is serious science, it have shown that w

    continued from last post

The once-plentiful corporate sponsors, as well as foundations, are making hard decisions about freezing or scaling back charitable giving. In the 2009 edition of the Foundation Center's Foundation Growth and Giving Estimates report, 67 percent of the foundations surveyed indicated they will reduce their giving in 2009. While similar Michigan data was not available, The Council of Michigan Foundations reports seeing trends with foundation giving, including more foundations willing to provide general operating support, and shifting priorities to provide for emergency needs. Knowing this arms non-profits with information that can help us adapt to the current market: Ensure a diversified funding stream that is not overly reliant on foundation and corporate dollars, seek donors who may now prioritize our mission because of the emergency needs in our community, and talk to our current network of foundations to see if they are giving general operating dollars
