   About Acoustic Triangle
The three members of Acoustic Triangle have significant backgrounds in European 'classical' music and also in jazz. The trio's music contains a wide variety of influences - from ancient themes and folk styles through impressionism and the jazz era to the avant-garde. Emphasis is put on melody, extended structured composition, spontaneous improvisation and interaction between the players. No amplification of any kind is used in the trio's performances. ................................................................................................................. Much of the trio's current repertoire has been penned by Tim Garland and Gwilym Simcock. There is a seamlessness in the group's music; the spontaneous elements have become integrated into the compositions, resulting in a harmonious performance which is a long way from conventional theme and variations-style jazz. Sometimes it is hard to decide whether they are playing written music or improvising. ................................................................................................................. Acoustic Triangle has appeared in many fine concert halls, arts centres and festivals, but some of the most memorable concerts have been in churches. So Malcolm Creese decided to set up a tour celebrating beautiful sacred buildings - from small chapels to huge cathedrals. The 2005 Tour of Sacred Places was a huge success and Acoustic Triangle has now established a unique reputation for performing in such buildings. ................................................................................................................. The group's philosophy says that if you include the buildings in your thinking at every stage in the creative process, the results will be profoundly more successful. Instead of just transporting whatever music they might normally play into a large church for example, the players compose, rehearse, and perform with careful regard for the space itself. They pick the programme on the day of the concert - once they have 'tried out' the building and gained a feel for its sonic qualities and general ambience. ................................................................................................................. Acoustic Triangle has appeared in concert with the Sacconi String Quartet and with jazz soloists such as Martin France, Lianne Carroll and Gerard Presencer. On Ascension Day in 2006, Acoustic Triangle was invited to play in Westminster Abbey. Tim Garland composed a new piece for the occasion - Jubilate Deo - for the trio with the Abbey choir. There was also an appearance on ITV in a recent episode of Lewis - the follow-up to Inspector Morse. Tim Garland was the soloist with The BBC Concert Orchestra at the first performance his own saxophone concerto in 2004. The following year Tim composed a piano concerto for Gwilym which received its first performance at The Sage, Gateshead with The Northern Sinfonia Orchestra. ................................................................................................................. Acoustic Triangle has released three acclaimed albums, collected several top awards and is continuing to present its distinctive music in Britain, mainland Europe and beyond. ................................................................................................................. “Unpretentious music-making of the highest order. Sheer delight!” Jazz Journal International ................................................................................................................. "Together they make the most beautiful sound, so spacious and melting." The Observer ................................................................................................................. "A trio of world-class virtuosi...exquisitely passionate and inspired" BBC Music Magazine ................................................................................................................. ................................................................................................................. PLAYERS' BIOGRAPHIES: .............................................................................................................. MALCOLM CREESE combines jazz and classical performances with extensive film, television and recording work. Malcolm toured the world with Cleo Laine from 1991 to 2001, and with pianist Stan Tracey for six years. He has also worked with Lee Konitz, George Shearing, Art Farmer, George Benson, Mel Tormé, Kenny Wheeler, Sting, Diana Ross, James Galway, John Rutter, John Williams and The London Symphony and London Philharmonic Orchestras. Malcolm has played on numerous film soundtracks including Lord of the Rings, Cold Mountain, Sinbad and G.I.Jane. He formed his innovative trio Acoustic Triangle in 2000. ................................................................................................................. "A warm and exciting virtuoso" The Stage ................................................................................................................. TIM GARLAND works regularly with pianist and composer Chick Corea and leads his own popular 10-piece Underground Orchestra. He has played with Gary Burton, Billy Cobham, John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler. Tim became widely known for fronting Lammas, a group fusing folk and jazz genres that ran for ten years. Tim teaches at the Royal Academy of Music in London and is also Composer in Residence and Fellow of the University of Newcastle. In 2006 he received two major awards: the coveted prize for 'Jazz Musician of the Year' at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards and the award for 'Innovation' at the BBC Jazz Awards. ................................................................................................................. “A hugely talented individual…Garland’s artful lyricism is a joy to listen to.” Audio Street ................................................................................................................. GWILYM SIMCOCK is an outstanding jazz pianist, classical pianist, French horn player and composer. He attended Chethams School in Manchester and later the Royal Academy of Music, where he received the coveted 'Principal's Prize' for outstanding achievement. Gwilym toured with Kenny Wheeler on French horn in 2003, and on piano in January 2005 - when his fellow musicians included Dave Holland, Evan Parker, Norma Winstone and Lee Konitz. In July 2005 Gwilym received both the 'Rising Star' prize at the British Jazz Awards and its equivalent at the BBC Jazz Awards. In 2006 he was chosen as one of the BBC's elite 'New Generation' artists. ................................................................................................................. "A jaw-droppingly exciting pianist." Hi Malcolm,
Just dropping by to say how wonderful the band sounds, and to wish you all the best on your summer tour. Hope we get to play together again sometime, though I don't see when that could happen with your busy tour schedule!
As we say in French, "Merde" for the tour.
