....The Seattle Weekly: A Cozy Kitchen sounds like a less freaky Devendra Banhart with better guitar skills. A cozy kitchen boasts only three regular members—Cody Madison, Kyle Gootkin, and Drew Miller, all students at WWU—and a rotating cast of extras. The collaborative result is a song like "You're Not Angry," an artful combination of strummed guitars, reverb, washboards, and static. Lead singer Madison credits his hometown of Tacoma, "a nasty, gritty, romantic and a beautiful place," for inspiring this sound. -Paige Richmond .... SEATTLEST BLOG: The group seems to know how to mine for influences. Their myspace page cites “The Boss,” AA Bondy, Yeasayer, Animal Collective, Cave Singers, Antony & The Johnsons, Beach House, David Bazan, Cut Copy, and Destroyer as factors in their style. That's one hell of a list, but the local trio manages to sound at least a little bit like many of these artists without directly following any of them. We think if they toss The Dodos onto the pile, then they’ve got their sound pretty well summed up.Their song “I CAN NOT READ” starts off with some pleasant folksy picking and lo-fi wavering vocals that sound like they came straight off the mountain. The lyrics tell the brief story of a boy pulled from cold water and what exactly drew him there. A subdued electric guitar adds shiny texture, and experimental electronics give the tune some modern bite before it ends with a barrage of electronic dissonance, marking an interesting transition from indie folk to early Animal Collective noise. -Aaron M. .... The Stranger: A Cozy Kitchen: The self-loathing of early Modest Mouse with the campfire vibe of the Cave Singers. .... SEATTLE SHOW GAL: A Cozy Kitchen. This Bellingham trio is making old-timey folk music with a Generation Y modernization. A Cozy Kitchen inspires one to grab the nearest washboard or hooch jug while someone twists and turns the reverb knobs. This is not your Appalachian pappy’s folk music. -Jodi Kaufer .... EMP SEMI FINALSIST: Reverb-drenched Bellingham trio, A Cozy Kitchen creates a compelling blend of indie folk that takes you back to a simpler time of washboards and hand-crank radios. With acoustic guitars, drums and assorted electronic noises, Cody Madison, Kyle Gootkin and Drew Miller fashion thoughtfully simplistic lo-fi folk.
