These are video-walks through ruins and across scrub
in a former concentration camp at Rivesaltes in the south of France,
between the Mediterranean and the mountains on the edge of a motorway.
Refugees have been held here during the dark episodes of the twentieth century:
the Spanish Revolution, World War Two when thousands of Jews
were sent from here to Auschwitz, the Algerian War of Independence,
and recently, Eastern Europeans without visas seeking a better life.

In a morbid condition of the brain, dreams often have a singular actuality, vividness, and extraordinary semblance of reality. At times monstrous images are created, but the setting and the whole picture are so truth-like and filled with details so delicate, so unexpectedly, but so artistically consistent, that the dreamer, were he an artist like Pushkin or Turgenev even, could never have invented them in the waking state. Such sick dreams always remain long in the memory and make a powerful impression on the overwrought and deranged nervous system.

"Is there in the whole world a being who would have the right to forgive and could forgive? I don't want harmony. From love for humanity I don't want it. I would rather be left with the unavenged suffering. I would rather remain with my unavenged suffering and unsatisfied indignation, even if I were wrong. Besides, too high a price is asked for harmony; it's beyond our means to pay so much to enter on it. And so I hasten to give back my entrance ticket, and if I am an honest man I am bound to give it back as soon as possible. And that I am doing. It's not God that I don't accept, only I most respectfully return him the ticket."
- Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov
