My god! It's full of Tim Stotz's Interests
GeneralLike just about everybody else here, I have too many to list. I do the digital thing. In front of the cam, and behind it. I make movies, illustrations, and digital photography. Check some of that stuff at www.timstotz.com. When I’m not working, I hit the standard fare: drinking, dancing, and all that stuff. I dig movie night still, I know it’s highschool, but how else do I hold on to the youth? I love doing indie film projects—just about any job you can find, including acting. I work cheap. I am way more Bruce Campbell than Russell Crowe (man there i am ripping on him again--i really don't hate him that much). For those keeping score at home, Russell Crowe is a dick (but he is a dick, gotta admit). I like geeky stuff, but I’m not as full-on obsessive about some of it as my geek brethren. ‘I like star wars—never dressed like it’ would be a good analogy. Actually in Kindy-garden, I was the baddest, mofo Darth Vader in dee land. I like computery stuff, space stuff. But don’t get me wrong; I’m a fan of stupid, turn off your head relaxing too. Haven’t done reality shows yet, so not that bad. But I like Cheech and Chong Movies every now and then.
MusicI don’t like: "Penance Rock." Or penance media of any kind. I hate that there are pieces of music out there you have to listen to because they’re relevant, or indicative of the times or whatever. You’re sitting there not enjoying the music at all, and you’re sitting there listening to it because some crank says you need to. When asked why the music is good, they never talk about melody, harmony, or actual music. This spins them off on some pompous trivia or sociology lesson. That tune is important, and what’s more, it’s universally good. The idea that there is a universal musical ideal is nauseating to me. I’m sick of the pseudo intellectual, rolling stone writer wannabe who decries the herd of pop music, but fails to realize that he is in a herd of another kind. The rationale is like this, “The only reason they like that music is because everybody else does. So I will be all free thinking and listen to this music that only rock journalists like—and be different.” So, just exchanging one herd for another. Music Machismo is just lame. I don’t question why I like music too much. Mostly it’s emotional, primal, and kinda random. I don’t ever feel I owe anybody and explanation for what I like, but am happy to share it. And I don’t hate you for liking what you like…I damn sure might not agree with it, but hey. As long as I’m not stuck in a long as car ride with you, we’re cool. I love giving new stuff chances, and I don’t have any music I call guilty pleasure. I don’t feel guilty about music. If I want to be a straight guy who listens to Mari Wilson’s “Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps” I’m gonna do it. Great song. Can’t get it out of my head since I watched all of that “Coupling.” Enough vitriol, what do I like? You’re general rock is a good start, but I like Alternative (Alternative to what? Obscurity? That stuff is mainstream now), old prog rock, pop, power pop. I like Jazz, but don’t worship at it’s alter like some. I like blues, Punk, Classical, Some Country; I like Wall of sound hip-hop or trip hop like Tricky, but don’t generally care for what I call “misogynists with metronomes.” I also like just about any live music, although I do have my favorites.
Moviesif you have a burning desire to know if I prefer the origianl attack of the 50 foot woman or the remake, ask me.
TelevisionThere is good stuff out there, but every time I like a show, it gets cancelled. Like: Firefly, Angel, Big guy and Rusty the boy Robot, Dark Angel, etc. I liked Buffy a lot, Kung Fu, all the treks, though i haven't watched the most recent, and the Niner was a little too political for me. 30 rock, Coupling! Adult Swim! Arrested Development, Scrubs. Earl has its charms too. Battlestar Galctica - old and New, just not the middle one. Galactica '80, I think. ick. check out channel101.com Twiggers Holiday! I hate you more than church and learning!
BooksAmy Hemple and TM McNally. If you've never done the Bukowski thing, you should, same thing with Burroughs. Well, look at me coming off all pedagogic, and telling you what you should do. What I meant to say, is please, if you're so inclined, give these good authors a try. And, yeah, I like your standard English major fare: Keats, Blake, Hardy, Laurel. If I were more dry, or more southern, I'd probably like Faulkner too. If I hated women, I'd probably like Hemingway more. (I do recomend MURIEL Hemingway's biopic: My Graddaddy is Famous, and Check Out My Rack.) And there's a shit ton of non fiction too on how to do me some photoshopping, or final cutting, or what have ye. Some friends (and several enemies) think i should hit the self help isle a bit, but fuck that cry baby shit! I like my flaws. do you? my flaws want to know if yours can come out and play!
HeroesDouglas Adams, Joss Whedon. .. width="425" height="350"> ..> Everyday people who live. Who fight the good fight. The unsung. The kind. Those who make tough decisions.

Quick note: I have no problem with the out-of-nowhere friend request. it's one of the cool thing about myspace. But, if your profile is set to private, and I can't verify that you are not actually a fake set up by a spam company, then you probably won't make the cut. But as a consolation prize, revel in the irony that you don't want strangers scoping you out, yet you want to welcome them with random invites. I’m not opposed to meeting people here, especially like minded creatives. And the thought of the date scene being driven by words first, has always appealed to me. I’m not saying I’m not a fan of the attractive female, but if you can get a glimpse of what’s inside, that won’t be all bad. In the conventional dating sceen all you have ot go on first is looks. I think it’s funny when asked, “what first attracted you to her or him,” people sometimes say things like intelligence, or warmth, or something like that. Well, that pretty much means you weren’t attracted to that person right off the bat, unless you gave IQ tests at the bar or supermarket or wherever. Sure people can look smart (I give you Russel Crowe, famously stupid, yet often plays geniuses. Dude his mind ain’t beautiful). Or people can wear the t-shirt with the clever phrase, but that just means you bought a clever t-shirt, not that you’re smart. So yeah, I want to meet you. To be my special friend.

WHAT'S NEW AT MARY'S PLACE

The infamous Mary's Place Open Stages are lightning rods for attracting outstanding live entertainment.

Guitar guru, Rick Zillhart, will be a very special Open Stage guest host tonight. Rick's life story would look something like a Loves Park version of the 1986 cult film, Crossroads, starring, Ralph Macchio. Zillhart played lead guitar for the band, Armed Vision, which absolutely ruled the Midwest scene all through the 80's. In the 80's the white hot spot light was put on the lead guitarist. In order to survive, the lead guitarist had to learn how to shred blistering solos and execute riffs with pin-point precision. After this period in Rick's life, he stepped out of the limelight, and decided to quietly share his knowledge with others by giving guitar lessons at, Paradise Guitars, in Beloit, Wisconsin, which he still does to this very day.

Rick has studied all the masters very closely including, Steve Vai, John Scofield, Randy Rhoads, Edward Van Halen, Jimmy Page, Danny Gatton, and Pat Metheny. Questions like, 'What kind of guitar pick should you use?' 'What kind of guitar gear should you should spend your hard earned money on?' 'What the hell is a Mixolydian mode?' Rick has been there and he knows the answers. Although Zillhart is a very humble man, don't let him fool you, he understands extremely advanced guitar techniques and knows guitar secrets that only a handful of people alive today could even comprehend.

There is no cover charge on Open Stage nights, and many Mary's regulars understand that's when some of the most amazing live entertainment you can find occurs.
