Whether you pin them as a quirky minimalist family band, or as a lovebird psych-pop duo, their affectionate and villainously catchy songs grab you as they breathe fresh air into the husband & wife pop-archetype. Nostalgia, disenchantment with friendship, and desire for more vacations are the center-points for their debut album "Friend Weakend," an intimate and sometimes scathing look at the friendships you take for granted, a sincere response to platonic love and its complexities. Every memory-etching melody and daydreaming chorus that these two put together arrives at heartfelt sincerity. This quality flows from the timely and organic synchronization of the band’s formation and grows with the maturing of their romantic accord. It makes sense: there are no frills with Action!, because chemistry leaves absolutely no room for embellishment – it is the main attraction by and of itself. With warmth exuding out of every detail, whether in the tension-toting harmonies of “Sandpiper” or the toe-tapping resolve of “In the Basement Corner,” you don’t feel bad humming these ditties hours later. In other words, don’t think Mates of State, think less extravagant Deerhoof combined with the mystically affecting Karl Blau. And be not misled – this is no tenderfoot twosome. Dan brings an academy-sanctioned drumming prowess to the team that’s been filtered of pretense and busyness via his days with local jazz quartets and the abstract pop outfit The Biv. Meanwhile, Robyn balances the scales with a folk-informed, to-the-point sweetness gleaned from days of hanging with her brother-in-law’s circle of standby Nashville bands, including The Carter Administration & Hands Down Eugene. Consequently, their music serves as a synthesis of Tennessee underground music, a relational push-and-pull that challenges and re-introduces the traditional faculties of ‘the band.’ Naturally, their sound has been fostered by independent house-shows and has been aptly recorded to tape by the locally infamous Jeremy Ferguson at Battle Tapes Recording. Action! have conjured up a flavor of pop that is raw, simple, and undeniably good. Armed with an exuberant innocence genuinely absent of naivete, they remind us that it is just as important to look inquisitively within, as it is to look compassionately next-door. ///krw
