Yeah, ol' Dad is possessed, and what a treat it is to see a performer as talented as Doug Jones show off his stuff while wearing hardly any makeup for a change. Jones is the actor behind Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies and Faun in Pan's Labyrinth; here we actually get to see his face, and he's the best thing about "Skin and Bones." He's a genuinely frightening creature, his head poking out from the top of his blanket, grinning and salivating and freaking everybody out. This episode is really a one-man show, as the rest of the cast does little to hold their own against the monster in the bedroom - Jones is obviously having a blast as he gets to act without tons of prosthetics.
Despite its shortcomings, "Skin and Bones" is ultimately a great showcase for Doug Jones, who's always able to bring a level of humanity to all of his various creatures. You won't be able to take your eyes off him as he glares and growls his way through this nightmarish episode - here's hoping he gets more roles where we can see his real face and hear his real voice.
REVIEW: Fear Itself's Episode "Skin and Bones" - Directed by Larry Fessenden
IOF FIRST LOOK: FEAR ITSELF - "SKIN AND BONES"
Indie genre favorite Larry Fessenden (THE LAST WINTER, WENDIGO) tackles this week's episode of FEAR ITSELF entitled, "Skin and Bones" concerning a subject that director is quite familiar with.
A rancher, played by Doug Jones (HELLBOY, PAN'S LABYRINTH) goes missing in the mountains for ten days
and miraculously returns home... rather different. Now, his somewhat dysfunctional family must face the
ravenous, supernatural force residing inside him.
What makes this episode really work is the incredible Doug Jones. If fellow HELLBOY star Ron Perlman is this
generation's Boris Karloff, then Jones is most definitely our Lon Chaney. Doug absolutely owns this
role, his performance shining through the very subtle prosthetics and makeup. It's clear that this man is
more than just a guy with foam latex stuck to his face. He's a very rare kind of actor who understands makeup as a tool, and works with it instead of around it. He shifts effortlessly between creepy, scary and physically imposing, transforming himself from the inside out, changing even his voice.

Ain't It Cool News Hellboy II
review by Moriarty Exert
In HELLBOY II, the removal of Meyers means we now have Hellboy (Ron Perlman), Liz (Selma Blair) and Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) as the center of the film, and each of them benefits from the way the focus has shifted. Hellboy and Liz make a really touching, interesting couple this time out, and both of them seem stronger, more fully realized. With Doug Jones finally getting the chance to play Abe physically and vocally, the performance congeals into something memorable. He is the heart of the film, the biggest surprise for me. He gets a love story of his own this time, and as a result, there’s a scene in the middle of the film between Hellboy and Abe where the two of them bond over their broken hearts that is one of the best things I’ve seen in any film this year. It’s so human, so recognizable, so identifiable... and yet, we’re watching a giant red demon with a rock hand and a fish-man drunk on cheap Mexican beer, singing one of the cheesiest songs ever recorded. And it works. It works because they have become completely human by that point. The absurdity works for the film, not against it.
Doug interviewed by EMPIRE MAGAZINE in Make-up on the set of HELLBOY II
What’s so great about the Surfer? Doug Jones. That man moves like something, not of this Earth. There’s a grace and a calm to him – he doesn’t ride the board like a surfer, he rides it as though it was simply an extension of his self. There’s a reason why he interacts with Doom and the FF… there’s something of the powers cosmic about them. They stand out from the other mortals, there’s a spark of the infinite in them, now… that’s never said, but you see it in the curiosity with which he holds them.
Now – when he’s covered in the silver look – He does in fact look unreal, but there’s a point where he’s separated from his board – and he takes on a tarnished look. Here is where Doug Jones shines so brightly. Spectral Motion’s make up on the Surfer is fantastic. Yes, they did do a lot of what you’ll see of the Surfer in this movie – no matter what Fox officially says – And the results are spectacular. When he’s strapped to that table and being questioned by Sue… I was just so incredibly happy. Just so happy.
And Doug Jones?
GOD BLESS YOU FOR EXISTING! Amongst all the cg, all the silliness – you lent the Silver Surfer the poise and the grace that only one who had soared the space ways of the infinite could have. And… if JMS does the job that I hope he will on the SILVER SURFER movie… and if they get a brilliant director. And they get Doug Jones back. That will be a movie, that I can’t even fathom the coolness of.
