About me:
Ok This is gonna feel like bragging/too much - but someone told me to put everything up here - so here goes: My plays include: Swimming in the Shallows (about a guy who falls in love with a shark, and a woman with too much stuff) Five Flights, The Typographer's Dream (about a Typographer, a Geographer and a Stenographer) The Shaker Chair, The Thugs (about a bunch of temps who think someone is killing people in the building, but no one will tell them, because they are temps), The Receptionist and The Drunken City. My newest play The Receptionist was workshopped at Perry-Mansfield and the O’Neill Conference in Summer 2006 and will be produced by MTC in NY in their 2007-2008 season. The Thugs had a soldout, extended production at Soho Rep in 2006. The NY Times called it a “delightfully paranoid little nightmare” “taut, entertaining, and auspicious”; TimeOut NY gave it five stars and it was a “Don’t Miss” selection. It was named Top Ten by TimeOut, the Advocate, and the NY Sun. Won an Obie for playwriting and one for Anne Kauffman for directing. Second Stage produced Swimming in the Shallows as part of its 2005 Uptown Series - the New York Times called the sold out production “a screwy little jewel.” It was named Top Ten by TimeOut, featured on the cover of American Theater magazine in December, nominated for a GLAAD Media award and published in the Best Plays of 2005. David Korin’s set was nominated for a Lortel. Shotgun Players' production of Swimming won the 2000 Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Awards for Best Original Script, Best Production, and Best Ensemble. It was a Clauder Competition Award-winner, an L. Arnold Weissberger Award nominee, a LA Weekly nominee, and has been produced in New York, Los Angeles, London, San Francisco, Boston, Providence, Santa Cruz, Ithaca, Key West, Long Beach, Toronto, Salt Lake City, Philadelphia, Seattle, Tucson, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in Montreal - in French. Next up - Athens in Greek this summer. It is published by Playscripts. Five Flights played Off-Broadway at Rattlestick Theater in 2004, after a five-month sold-out run at San Francisco's Encore Theater in 2002. It won the Glickman Award, and was nominated for the American Theater Critics Award, the Elizabeth Osborn Award, and two BATCC Awards. It's published in Breaking Ground, an anthology of new plays edited by Kent Nicholson, and by Playscripts. The Typographer's Dream was produced by Clubbed Thumb in New York City and by BrightChoice at the Edinburgh Fringe, and by Encore Theater in San Francisco in 2005 and in Berkeley in a co-production with Shotgun Players in summer 2006. I worked with Jack Cummings III developing The Audience, which was nominated for three 2005 Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical. The Shaker Chair, produced by Actors Theater of Louisville in the Humana Festival in 2005, was nominated for the Kesselring Prize and is published by DPS. It's up next in Berkeley. I've had 4 plays done by the 24 Hour Plays. 3 Guys and a Brenda won the Heideman Award and was produced at the Humana Festival. 3 Girls and Bob was part of the 24 Hour Plays on Broadway in 2006 and starred Jennifer Aniston, Rosie Perez, Lynn Whitfield and David Cross. These and other plays have been read or workshopped at New York Theater Workshop, Playwrights Horizons, NYC’s Vineyard Theater, Soho Rep, Underwood Theater, Rude Mechanicals NYC, ACT in SF, the JAW/West Festival at Portland Center Stage, Printer's Devil, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Magic Theater, Salt Lake Actors Company, Southwark Theater, Hartford Stage and Clubbed Thumb. I'm an artistic associate at Shotgun Players and Encore Theater, and a member of MCC's Writers Coalition and of New Dramatists. I've gotten commissions from Playwrights Horizons, the Kitchen Theater in Ithaca, and Salt Lake Acting Company. I got my MA in Creative Writing from Brown in 1989 after studying with Paula Vogel and Mac Wellman. I'vs taught playwriting at Brown, Perishable Theater, SFSU, San Jose State University, the Berkeley Rep School, the O’Neill National Theater Institute and San Francisco’s Z Space. And there you go.
Who I'd like to meet:
Some good/bad fella. Theater folks.
