ADAM BRAND - HELL OF A RIDE February 2009
The title track from Adam Brand’s new album, Hell of a Ride, perfectly captures his attitude to life and music:
They called us crazy
We proved them wrong
They’ll be talking about us
Long after we’re gone.
It’s more than a decade since Adam Brand burst into town to leave his indelible stamp on Australian country music. In that time he’s collected a dozen Golden Guitars — including two for Male Vocalist — and many other major awards. He’s seen three of his albums go platinum, two gold, and released two gold DVDs. He’s also enjoyed innumerable hit singles.
Most recently, Adam picked up the Male Artist of the Year Golden Guitar and on the same night took out the CMC Oz Artist of the Year Award, voted by the fans, for the third consecutive year, making him the winner of every CMC award so far.
That’s because he’s built one of the largest and most dedicated fan bases in the country, and established a reputation as a powerful, passionate and dynamic performer.
All the way, he’s ridden his own race and followed his heart, both in creating his extraordinary music and when it came to building his amazing career.
“Over the years, I’ve sometimes felt that I didn’t fit the mould. But I kept doing what felt right, and the sales of albums and the reaction of the fans maintained the momentum. These days I’m at peace with what I do, and with my music being a little different.” Adam said.
With all that under his belt, Adam decided it was time to celebrate, and that’s what “Hell of a Ride” is about.
“The last 12 years have been the most amazing journey for me. When I crossed the Nullarbor [from Perth], I had nothing but a dream and a bunch of songs. I jumped into a whole new world, and it’s been incredible — a whirlwind that’s taken me all over Australia, allowed me to make the music I love, and given me the privilege of performing to some of the most loyal and dedicated fans you’d find anywhere,” Adam said.
“This song — along with the album — was a way to say thanks for all of that. The song has so many memories, so much emotion. It’s incredibly heartfelt — if it all ended tomorrow, I really wouldn’t mind, because it has been a hell of a ride!”
But Adam’s new album is much more than that. As well as celebrating the first stage of his career, Hell of a Ride is the beginning of a whole new journey for this country music phenomenon.
Industry heavyweights have been universally blown away by the calibre and class of Hell of a Ride, which has taken Adam’s music to a whole new level under the guidance of Nashville-based producer Richard Landis.
“This album’s about connecting with people — about writing and singing songs that touch them deeply,” Adam said.
“I want to write about things that matter — that make people hear the songs and get goosebumps because it’s how they feel.”
That was exactly the experience Adam had when he performed “Kissing the Phone” at a recent concert.
“A lady came up to me and started crying. She said her husband was about to ship out to the Middle East, and she was really touched by that song. For me, that’s what it’s all about,” Adam said.
And there are many songs on this album that will move people deeply, including the powerful “Letting Go” — a song that particularly touches Adam himself, following the tragic loss of his young nephew two years ago.
Hell of a Ride also offers up some absolutely exquisite love songs, particularly the heartfelt “Some Dreams” and the vulnerable and gentle “Yesterday was Beautiful”.
But the exuberance and energy that have always been Adam Brand’s calling card are very much in evidence on this album. There’s a killer party song, “Thump”, that will lift the roof of every venue Adam plays, and have the ground shaking at festivals around the country.
And Adam’s gone a little retro with the passionate “Crazy Like That”, a song for those of us who’ve been around for a while — and still feel the spark.
“I can picture the couple in this song so clearly — and I hope it will be me in 20 years!” Adam said.
Every song on this extraordinary album has something to say — and says it with passion, power and plenty of heart. Adam’s brought together an impressive songwriting team, including Mike Carr, Travis Meadows, Bobby Terry and Mark Stephen Jones.
“That’s a Man” is a heartfelt tribute from a son to his father, “Blue Sky Cathedral” takes a different look at faith, and “Ready for Love” is a positive, exhilarating look at life, love and being young
But it’s “Wondering”, written by Adam and Mike Carr, that says it so simply and honestly: give it your all, and don’t die wondering what could have been.
“That’s how I’ve approached this musical journey, and it’s the way I want to keep going as I begin the next stage of my career. It has been a hell of a ride, and I hope it will continue for a long, long time to come,” Adam said.
