Adam Kurtz lost his job, lost his house, and lost a critical wiffleball game all in the same week. While other songwriters might turn to booze and late night mournful song crafting, Kurtz instead set out to write and record a full-length alt-country album to document his decision to take to the Open Road, and put Portland in his rearview mirror for a spell (though booze and late night song crafting may have been involved). Open Road documents in song the decision to leave home, to miss the good times and not the bad, and to be ready for whatever challenges and excitement await.
As with 2008’s “The Devil is Defeated”, Kurtz clones himself into a full band sound – drums, guitar shreddery, lush background harmonies. There are songs that rock, ones that tug the heartstrings, and others that display Kurtz’s humor and willingness for adventure.
Hello Mate, love that tune you play sitting in your kitchen...was awsome playing along side you in New York, and am looking forward to doing it again up in Portland.....Bye 4 now...Adam
Hey, I was at the Slante last night listening to you at the open mic. Thank you so much for a copy of your new album, and even more thanks for gracing me with your wonderful music. I was having a rough day, and your songs were just what I needed to hear to encourage myself to move on, that life isn't so bad. Your performance was a natural high. I hope to see you live again!
