Influences
Erik Satie, whose love of the absurd and distaste for the grandiose helped define Bohemian France, likely is my number one influence in all things musical and artistic. My electric bass playing generally can be said to be influenced by bassists like Victor Wooten, John Pattitucci, and Jaco, as well as guitarist Stanley Jordan. I draw my compositional influence from a variety of of sources; from Mingus to Herbie Hancock to Bartok to Ellington.
Adam Neely is an upright and electric bass player/composer from the Washington DC Metropolitan area. He is the winner of the prestigious 2009 Herb Pomeroy award for excellence in jazz composition as well as the winner of the 2006 Maryland Distinguished Scholar in the Arts award. Adam has recently graduated summa cum laude with a degree Jazz Composition from Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying under musicians such as Dave Buda, Oscar Stagnaro and Bruce Gertz for bass performance, Ken Pullig, Greg Hopkins, Scott Free and Bob Pilkington for jazz arranging and composition, and Yakov Gubanov and Marti Epstein for composition in the common practice.
An accomplished performer as well as composer, Adam has performed at the Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts, the Berklee Performance Center, the Takoma Park Jazz Festival and the Presidential Yacht, the USS Sequoia. He is also an accomplished theater musician, performing in community and regional theater in both the Boston and DC areas.
It is heartfelt when I say thanks for the add, Adam. I say this because I was able to improve my improvisational playing substantially in a few short months simply from studying a couple educational vids you have up on YouTube.
Hey, I remember you from musicianforums.com aaages ago, I've watched your youtube guides to bass soloing over the years and have taken a lot from them, I like the tunes here a lot too. There are a few songs I wrote and recorded recently on my page if you're interrested, theres a Jazz standard type song, a piano ballad that I tried to do some interresting stuff harmonically in and a Folk guitar piece that I played with meter changes in.
Sure, that'd be cool. You'll have to give me your number next time I see you, or shoot me a message. Jordan and I like to do a lot of drumless trio stuff.
Hey man! Thank you very much. Your stuff is sick, as always. Summer has been great so far. Im just chillin in Boston. Doing some playing and working. How has yours been so far? You in the Bean?
when are you coming back for spring break? I haven't been able to schedule a twins date, but we gotta jam or find another gig to do. Maybe ellington's on eighth will have an opening, so let me know when youre gonna be back asap
Peace -Elijah
P.S. I'm doing that musical that you referred me for with Zak, thanks a lot for that!
