Welcome to my domain. I’m a Ronin piano-player, taking my music from the gutter to the clouds. Watch out for guerrilla style attacks from my jazz trio, we can pop up anywhere (and usually do!).
CHECK OUT MY JAZZ RADIO SHOW ‘BLACK WAX” ON pbsfm.org.au OR 106.7FM IN MELBOURNE. NOW ON FACEBOOK!
Funkwise, I slip into the shadows, as the apparition NEON BOGART takes hold. I’m the frontman and play the keys, while “Slap” Spiegl gets all Bootsy-meets-Ron Carter on yo ass! Dan Nilsson’s my axeman, carving a slice of the funk cake somewhere in between Sco and Prince (at least that’s what I told him to do!). Trav Constable’s got my back when it comes to the backbeats, and we’re both mad about New Orleans funk and parade rhythms, so that’s desitively bonnaroo! We’re playing around this town, so check out the gig guide! Got our debut EP just around the corner – CYBERBLANCA, check it out!
Got an as-yet-untitled psychedelic voodoo swampfunk EP burbling up from the primordial morass too, it features Justin Ashworth returning to Bass duties after a long absence, Trav Constable on Beats, and Natalie Grant on Gris Gris Percussion. Stay tuned for Dr John meets Sun Ra in a green groove gumbo!
Melbourne’s Dark Magus of Vocal Tones, Henry Manetta, keeps me busy in a Stockholm scenario as his Jazz slave and co-conspirator. Mixing Soul, Jazz, Funk and Sci Fi in his sweltering cauldron. The Soul prophet emerges from his Burwood tomb to pull new grooves from the Earth as if they were Mangrove roots. 21st Century classics like ‘The Beatnik Sighed’ and ‘Stutter’ will tumble forth from the stereo, bathing you in the ethereal glow of a better tomorrow. Check him out at www.henrymanettaandthetrip.com.
Other projects include Justin Ashworth’s Latest band lineup (http://www.myspace.com/fleetingpoetry), and function band Combo Bombo (www.combobombo.com). Hope to see y’all round town.
Also check out my debut album from 2005, TRANSMOGRIFY. The true and complete social impact of my musical mission statement will not be able to be fully assessed for many thousands of years, so go get on it.
