My Goal:
To find, catalog & then record lost songs using more modern arrangements. The idea is to present a catalog of great, but little know, American songs in a format that is more understandable or “acceptable” to a modern listener. The idea is to rejuvenate interest in the Great American Songbook, giving these songs a new lease on life. Thereby creating a new generation of listeners & troubadours. Long live the Song!
Volume 1: Camp Chase
What you have here is my recorded notebook. These recordings are samples of the tunes I have discovered while trying to learn more about our great American music history. Some of them are songs that are well known but served as a turning point in my understanding & some of them are obscure & nearly lost, if not for the field recordings where I heard them.
This is the first installment in my journey to discover & reinterpret great songs from our past, in the hope to give them a new chapter in history. As this series continues I plan to dive deeper into the great American song book in the desire to bring back great tunes from near extinction. I invite you to enjoy & join me on this quest as a listener & as a song collector.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Railroad Blues: This is a Sam McGee tune. I learned it from a book I found at the library. I really liked the lyrics so I figured it out. Gary says he’ll let me hear the original recording once this project it finished so I know what it really sounds like!

---------
Nelly Gray: This is a song that is somewhat of a combination. The lyrics are an adaptation of the Benjamin Hanby song but the tune is my own. So I guess we worked this out out as a joint effort.

---------
Camp Chase: I first heard this fiddle tune on a collection of field recordings. The recording told the story of the tune having been played as a fiddle competition piece at the Civil War era prison camp. Camp Chase was located just outside Columbus Ohio. Oddly enough, I learned that my home, which is where this album was recorded, sits on land that was once part of Camp Chase. Its said that the winner of the fiddle competition was set free.
