I used to wonder why people started bands. Any musician will tell you that it's hard work, it's long hours, and unless you're Britney Spears, the pay sucks. But, the first time I heard Radiohead, the first time I picked up a guitar, the first time I put words and chords together to make music, the first time someone danced to one of our songs... I slowly came to understand why musicians drive through rain, snow, sleet and a whole lot more to perform for two or three people in the basement of a coffee shop. When someone tells you that they loved a song you wrote, you realize not why you do this... but why you HAVE to do it.
Each member of Adams Wilson has a story like that. We have day jobs, we have families, and we have vastly different personalities, but hot damn do we love to play music together. It seems pretentious to label it a "calling", but that's what it feels like to me, and I think that goes for the rest of the guys as well. Playing music doesn't pay our bills. But, when someone comes up to us after a show and says "thank you", that's enough to keep us going for months.
It seems strange to say, because we're so close now, but a few years ago, none of us knew each other very well, if at all. Somehow, in the Summer of '08, the band just fell together. There's really no rational explanation for it; it just happened, and it works. Matt and I each write the raw materials of a song that we then bring to the band. We then spend several weeks hashing out the mechanics and vibe of the music. Josh bangs the drums and keeps the energy level high, Ian plays percussion while dancing like a madman, Jason rocks the bass and mediates disputes, and Matt sets his Les Paul on fire while ripping out amazing leads. I hide behind the microphone and sing till I'm hoarse.
If the band piled in a van together, and we had to agree what music to put on the stereo, I think it would be difficult for us to decide without causing blood to be spilled. Matt's a Berklee snob, Jason and Josh are into Blues, and Ian's into 90s hip-hop of all things... I lean toward singer-songwriters. But, in my opinion, that diversity has helped us develop a unique Americana/Rock sound. You could put us in the same family tree as My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses, Counting Crows, or Augustana.
The long and short: our music is fiercely original, and our shows are focused on you having a good time. We hope to see you at one of them soon.
