As a member of Fascinating Aida for nearly a quarter of a century, I have co-written and sung copious comic/satirical songs but, for my personal cabarets I prefer to dabble in a different genre. Many cabaret singers perform the Great American Songbook or excerpts from Broadway/West End musicals. That works for them, but I prefer to take a different path. My voice is much better suited to jazz than to show tunes. So, no Sondheim or Lloyd Webber for me, I like to seek out obscure songs and weave them into a story to carry my audience through the evening in a jazz / cabaret / comic style with a goodly quantity of chat between the songs. I believe that, at the end of one of my shows, the audience should feel that they have learnt something about me as a person, as well as a performer. Not all of it will be true, of course, but I tell it as if it is.
