   About Ade Stevenson

Got into the guitar via James Brown, the Velvet Underground and the Stones. Played a few gigs in Manchester and Stockport pubs. Did a Stooges type thing at College - lotta fun. Got to do some great support slots for acts such as the Manic Street Preachers, Blur, and the James Taylor Quartet.

Next was a sort of pyschedelic blues band called 'The Beautiful Happiness'. We put out a few records on the Cheree label and did a fair bit of touring, variously supporting Ocean Colour Scene (Paul Weller's band) and Slowdive (now Mojave 3) amongst others. Our records were produced by Pete Kember otherwise known as Sonic Boom of the 'Spacemen 3'. I got to meet and work with some great (and very druggy) people such as 'My Bloody Valentine' and 'Spiritualised'.

Dramatic change of style next up and a bit of a home coming to a funk, acid jazz thing called 'Mal'. Lotsa gigs including residencies at The Jazz Cafe in Camden and the The Orange, West Kensington, London. Recorded for Acid Jazz and eventually got the big Warners Brothers record deal but never followed through somehow. Lost a few members to 'Faithless' - missed a trick myself there maybe.

All change again to join 'The Flamingoes', a power punky thing. They were mates of mates but it didn't really work out. Wrote some great stuff with James though. One or two other bands followed including 'Jensen' and 'Massifunk' but none seemed to quite do the trick.

So moved back home to Manchester and now working hard on getting my jazz muse sorted properly. Currently being mentored by ace guitarist Mike Walker. Mike is one the best players in the world having worked with many of the greats including Dave Holland and Steve Swallow, legendary composer George Russell, Kenny Wheeler, Anthony Braxton and Bill Frisell. It's a great privilege and flattering to get positive vibes from the man. Also meeting and hanging out with great jazz and funk dudes up here in MCR such as the phenomenal drummer Luke, John and Stuart from The Cinematic Orchestra and the funky folk from Little Green. In the process of putting my own jazz thing together.

I also blog about Manchester and jazz in the guise of 'The Ring Modulator' and co-host the EXR Jazz show on Manchester's ALL FM 96.9

Concrete Moniker
|| NEW RELEASE ||

findlay_hunter_rennie emerge from Manchester's unsung experimental underground, with a debut album brimming full of razor sharp ideas, glistening soundscapes, soaring melodies and decomposed structures. All improvised, all live, always unpredictable. Cello meets guitar meets trombone meets laptop meets a lot of effects pedals.

Download includes 6-track album, pdf liner notes and exclusive cover artwork by Becca Smith.

Shoreline

Shoreline are an eight piece folk ensemble from Brighton, and part of the Willkommen collective that includes The Miserable Rich and Sons of Noel & Adrian. Their debut album is called Time Well Spent and it's absolutely gorgeous - officially released on 22nd September, advance copies will be available at this special album launch show.

Soy Un Caballo

Soy Un Caballo are a duo from Belgium who have produced a delightful first album, with a little help from an amazing line-up of musicians including Bonnie ÔPrinceÕ Billy (singing in French!).
ÒÉsmooth harmonies and a smoother pop sensibilityÉ as cool as Jean-Paul Satre and as romantic as the Left Bank.
Ó The Wire

Danny Norbury & Andrew Hargreaves
We've been trying to get Danny to come and play a solo set ever since Static Caravan released his mini-album, Dusk, on mini-CD last year. It sold out rather quickly, and picked up some great reviews, which is no surprise: it's a stunning piece of work. Danny is heading out on tour with The Boats later this month and has enlisted the help of Boatman Andrew Hargreaves for this special set.

THE FAMILY ELAN at the Art Of Tea, tuesday 10th june.
dramatic, sensual, hypnotic & hauntingly beautiful devotional songs of autumn leaves and nights of fire and wine.

Elan derives much inspiration from devotional and folk music traditions. The tanbur playing of the Kurdish Sufi mystic Ostad Elahi and Âshyq songs of the Azerbaijani sâz master Edalat Nasibov spring immediately to mind, alongside the rawer, more percussive sounds of the Yayla musicians of the Eastern Black Sea region – who fashion reed instruments from young pine saplings - like Hasan Yïldïrïm (who plays the violin like a drum) and Hayri Dev. The music of the Rebetes of early twentieth century Greece is an obvious benchmark, alongside more recent European folk revivalists like the Hungarian band Muzsikás. Other signposts might include the bouzouki inventions of Anne Briggs and the musical tapestries of the Incredible String Band. There is also a ‘pop’ sensibility lurking in there somewhere, though it is nigh on impossible to pin down in the conventional sense.

The Family Elan is Chris Hladowski - bouzouki, vocals, guitar, baglamas, fiddle, gimbri, clarinet, thigh slapping, and an unknown Chinese Lute – and Hanna Tuulikki - metal flute, wooden flute, wooden recorder, plastic recorder, voice. Both players have been involved in critical groups such as A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Scatter, Nalle and One Ensemble, they release their debut album on Chicago’s Locust Records in late 2007.

Hello Ade Stevenson

Subdub&Exodus, New Bohemia, Vagabondz & The Doctors Orders have joined forces with Compost Records and the radio show Soulsearching to bring you an incredibly special weekend of music covering the best in Dubstep, reggae, hiphop, broken beat, drum & bass and dance-floor soul music on a setting taken straight from paradise.

The festival site is in the gorgeous surroundings of Petrcane, close to Zadar, A fishing village on a peninsular where the Dalmation Coast meets The Adriatic Sea. For those in the know it will be recognised as the same sight that the Garden Festival is held. It has an outside Amphitheatre for live acts, a Beach Side Terrace for day & night time dancing and a 1000 capacity nightclub for the beats to go on right through the night.
At this beautiful site you can swim in the glistening Adriatic, dance on the beach under the stars, join us aboard the swashbuckling Argonaut Boat Party, get your groove on to a Funktion 1 Soundsystem in a retro Studio 54 styled nightclub or relax beneath the pines along the forested coastline.

Other acts confirmed include:

Foreign Beggars
Dj Chef/Chefal
Bun Zero
Ruckspin
SMB
INC & Medison
Fliptrix
Mc's Jila Andlar & Gusto
+ more to follow
