About me:
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC,RLC, CCE, CIMI, CST (cert.appl.)
Nikki started her professional life as a nurse in the Intensive Care Units of Bellevue Hospital, New York City, in 1971. After the birth of her first daughter in 1975, her interest in breastfeeding bloomed. She worked with breastfeeding mothers when she was a public health nurse, and was librarian for her local La Leche League chapter. Her passion for mothers and babies was unleashed in full at Booth Maternity Hospital, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since 1986, Nikki has made mothers and babies the focus of her career. The birth of her second daughter in 1990 only strengthened her dedication.
Her publications include “Benefits of Breastfeeding and Their Economic Impact”, “How to help yourself through labor,” and “Sexuality and Breastfeeding”. As the first lactation consultant for the Philadelphia Health Department; she wrote a breastfeeding promotion policy, organized a task force, created a breastfeeding resource guide, and developed a work plan.
Nikki is a childbirth educator, a lactation consultant, an infant massage instructor, a cranio-sacral therapist, a researcher, a writer, and a public speaker. She was the Film Reviews Editor for the Journal of Human Lactation, from 1994 to 2007. She is currently on leave from her position as Adjunct Faculty (Maternal-Child) at Union Institute and University. Her other interests include figure skating, back-up rhythm guitar (Cajun, old-time and Irish), flatfooting, clogging, and bodhran.
Presently, Nikki is loving working as the lactation consultant for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. In 1992, Nikki was the first lactation consultant to work at the Health Department; she wrote a policy, drafted a workplan, convened a taskforce, and developed a resource guide. When the position became permanent, Nikki didn't see any sense in putting her nursing toddler in daycare so that she could work promoting breastfeeding for everyone else. So she passed on this opportunity, trusting that if she worked hard, that some similar job would come to her. She never dreamed it would be the same job, only 13 years later!
Nikki imagines clean air, clean water and fresh wholesome food being major international goals. She imagines that the pursuit of armaments and war is dropped, because it isn’t good for babies. She sees everyone, everywhere, caring for and about babies
