Bio
Singer, pianist and composer/songwriter. Born in Milan to a southern Italian family, she grew up in Trieste, a small town by the sea and by the northeastern Italian border with ex-Yugoslavia. Her cultural and geographical background has strongly influenced her in her love for mixed languages and cultures. She's been based in London since 2010. Her life as a professional musician has taken her through many different musical habitats and studies. She is a classically trained pianist and has been a singer mainly focused on Jazz and Brazilian songs; her tastes are naturally open to any interesting musical expression and her compositions reflect this omnivorous tendency. She owes to her father her love towards the music of L.van Beethoven, F.Chopin, C. Debussy, A.C.Jobim, and the wonders of brazilian music in general. She started writing her own music as a teen-ager but never performed it until after her thirties. Her songs come from a form-free and instinctive writing, in which the voice often breaks free from words to follow in unisons the rhythmically busy lines that recur as a sort of leitmotif in her style. The very few lyrics she writes are more like juxtaposed images than stories told, like pictures taken randomly from a box and shown quickly one after the other. - QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION AND TRAINING - While attending the regular school courses (high school and partly university), Adriana has attended the Conservatory of Music in Trieste, achieving a classical piano degree (Laurea Breve). Her classical studies have been a very strong influence on her. She also sang in the Conservatory Choir for many years and toured northern Italy and Europe with it. At the same time and in the same Conservatory she attended the jazz course. She has also attended many workshops with musicians like Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Stefano Bollani and Klaus Gesing amongst others. - PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE : - BANDS - Adriana has been working as a professional singer since she was 16, singing in many different bands and line-ups, mainly in the northern Italian scene. She has been working as a free lance singer since then, doing back-up and lead vocals for bands and for recording studios and consequentially achieving a very good experience as a live musician and session vocalist. She has performed in many funk, pop and jazz oriented bands before realizing her direction was towards investigating and performing the European jazz and Brazilian musical literature. In 2010, having just moved to the UK, she joined the Irish cult band The Commitments for a northern American and European tour as a back-up vocalist. - THEATRE - As a composer: An Tan Tes/CTA-Gorizia As a singer: Puppet Festival-Mediterranea/CTA-Gorizia As an actress/composer/singer: Canto per Falluja/CSS-Udine As an actress/pianist: La lungje cene di Nadal/CSS-Udine - PROJECTS - With Namòs in a quintet line-up she released the album "Sestante" (Artesuono-2005) in which four compositions and arrangements are hers. She has now recorded a new album with her quartet, this time both singing and playing the piano on twelve new songs, soon to be released. - RADIO - She has been a radio speaker and producer for over twenty years, conducting her own radio shows from the Slovenian National Radio Station and interviewing hundreds of musicians of all kinds. - TUITION - She has started teaching piano and music theory when she was 20 and has been working in private and public schools and for private pupils regularly for over a decade; she has discontinuously taught in the following years, preferring the workshop format to daily teaching. From 2003 she conducted an interactive exhibition on music and theatre promoted by the Regional Theatre Agency of Friuli Venezia-Giulia and consequently taught over the same material in workshops for schools all over the FV-G Region. - EVENT ORGANIZING - She has been organizing two festivals in Trieste, both focusing on the Italian and Central European contemporary scene (Lampi d'Estate – KNK). - ACHIEVEMENTS - She received the 1° Premio Nazionale delle Arti in Rome in 2005 for one of her compositions. - FESTIVALS - Jazz and Wine of Peace – Cormòns (Gorizia-IT) Friuli-Venezia Jazz – Sesto al Reghena (Pordenone-IT) LENT Festival – Maribor (SLO) JEFF (JazzEtnoFunkFestival) - Koper (SLO) Puppet Festival/Mediterranea – Gorizia (IT) Vicino/Lontano - Udine (IT) Da vicino nessuno è normale - Milano (IT)
