Alex Painter's bio:
Alex's foundation in soul and r&b was established early on. He started his career as a teenager playing guitar in the blues bars of St. Louis with his group, Sinister Dane. A self-taught musician, Alex went on to study voice under James Earl Mumford at Indiana University. Here he both played guitar and sang with Mr. Mumford's African American Choral Ensemble, studying Gospel, Spirituals and Formal Composition. Experiencing a nomadic upbringing that exposed him to music from around the world, Alex's taste for sound evolved to encompass many genres such as the reggae and punk sounds of his father’s native roots in London/Birmingham, the sensuality of Brazil and the fire of Nigeria while traveling abroad on his own.
Upon settling in Los Angeles after high school, he found his voice as singer and songwriter for L.A. legends, Section 8. Exploring the intersection of funk, Afro-Latin, rock and reggae, Section 8 broke ground in the LA underground that lives on in such acts as Ozomatli. He later switched to bass and keyboards in the group, The Peak Show, another L.A. underground favorite. Painter soon found himself working with Mario Caldato of the Beastie Boys, making an album for Atlantic Records and touring with such groups as Maroon 5, Dave Matthews and Michael Franti's Spearhead. With Alex's songwriting skills, The Peak Show went on to license many of their songs to major motion pictures and television.
After the dissolution of The Peak Show, Painter went on to license some of his own solo work, started an independent label (Future Street Records) and began to take his production to the next level. The result was Alex Painter's debut album, "The Joyful Process". Recorded in Los Angeles with some of the city's key players, "The Joyful Process" album reflects a sensitivity to both songwriting and body shaking on the dance floor that stretches back through the roots of American music as well as reaches forward to the future of the electronic world. With a cast of players and producers that have worked with such greats as Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, War, Fishbone, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Arthur Lee and Love, Earth Wind and Fire, Rubén Blades and Celia Cruz, Alex Painter & The Joyful Process have taken the diversity of Los Angeles and stirred it into a genre melding statement that stirs the soul, uplifts the mind and moves the body.
Keep checking in for Alex's shows, remixes and new releases. Peace! :)
I finally finished up a project I have been working on closely with my homie DJ Trippin' over the past few months. The idea was to take a handful of my freestyles, studio tracks, and b-sides I've recorded over the last year and combine them all to a 1 track mix. All mixing, scratching, and juggling was performed by DJ Trippin'. The effort is available for high quality download by clicking the cover below!
