Welcome and thank you for stopping by Optical Edge. . .
As a younger brother, I was constantly trying to keep pace with the older kids. "Downhill sidewalk culture" would not allow the gromets (the youngest kids) to start from the front where the air was smooth and the sidewalk free of debris. Instead, I started from the back, where the procession was slower and more crowded. One particular day, I had enough of starting from the back. By not braking and putting one wheel in the grass, I could pass the older kids. After winning my first "Open Class Big Wheel" race - I was hooked on adrenaline.
Big wheels turned into scooters and scooters turned into bicycles. Unlike the previously wheeled vehicles, I could explore the neighborhood on my bike. Soon I was riding the Mount Wilson Toll road on my trusty Schwinn Sting Ray. Keep in mind that today, people ride the 18 mile, 4500 foot elevation gain on full suspension mountain bikes wearing full protection motocross gear. Back then, coaster breaks, sissy bars, and a school book bag with two PB's were "haute couture". After almost every Mount Wilson adventure, the coaster brake got hot enough to ooze grease from its casing requiring a repack. It's a good thing my older brother was patient, supportive, and willing to teach me how to wrench.
Like most boys, I liked airplanes. The faster and the louder they were, the better. The US Navy's television commercial "The Navy - it is not a job. It's an adventure!" resonated with me, so I joined the Navy and became an F-18 fighter pilot. Landing on aircraft carriers at night in a rainstorm gave a whole new meaning to ";Live the adventure!"
I completed my Navy tour of duty in 1996, but my love of flying and adventure travel only intensified. But what does one do after flying F-18s for a living? Fortunately, as a busy executive, I found I didn't have time for long weekend, multi-destination trips I enjoyed as a college student. And so, Optical Edge Adventures was born.
Between adventures, you can find me, moderating the web site, - adventuresportpov.com, skiing, mountain biking, river rafting, scuba diving, B.A.S.E. jumping, or 'flying' around Santa Monica on my electric skateboard.
. . . stay and explore some more!

Mt. Pinos was off the hook for beginners and advanced riders alike. Typically people got 4 to 6 runs in per day or about 28 - 42 miles of sweet single track riding!
We had some real challenges too but in true www.MTBOutdoors.com fashion ya all stepped up and made the weekend a resounding success. If you left before the big campfire - you missed out - on some delicious food and great conversation.
Back in the office, we are just catching up with the events calendar. Wednesday (today), through Sunday we have something for ya. Come on out and ride!
Wednesday Brown Mountain (bring your lights) - 6PM
Thursday Chesebro (bring your lights) - 6PM
Friday Early Morning Uncle Sullivan - 6AM
Saturday TBD
Sunday Mt Wilson Ride (shuttle or not the ride is happening) - 12Noon Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Inspired by this weekend's turnout, we are in the process of putting together a multi-day, multi-pitch mountain bike adventure! How about starting in Kernville with the Cannell Plunge, then rolling to Mammoth Mountain MTB Park, then North Star @ Tahoe, and culminating with the granddaddy of them all Downieville! Let us know if this sounds good to ya - click here.

Mountain bike with the crew at Mammoth, bungee jump at the Bridge to No Where, spear fish at Santa Cruz Island or do paper work. . . .. Well someone has to make sure we keep getting cool events on the calendar!
As I type, some of the pictures are in from bungee jumping - they are fantastic. SCOA represent! This event was a long time in the making thanks for following through and jumping. Thanks to Diana for making it happen.
Thanks for your continued patience with individual email - I haven't gotten back to you all. I encourage you to use the forums and comment sections to get the answers you need.
Are your good at working with large groups and being active? Are you personable? Do you have a skill or a passion you would like to share? Wanna be a Co-Organizer? SCOA is one of the busiest groups in the area. If we had more people to draw on for events - we could be busier!
All you have to do is be early, courteous and make sure everyone has fun. SCOA will take care of the rest. Interested? Drop me a line adventures@opticaledge.com.

It took 6 weeks for the new HD helmet camera to come in - but it is here and Brian Petras was gracious enough to let SCOA borrow it. The video picture quality blows away everything else.
Even better, I no longer have to carry around that 14 lbs. pack anymore. We are expecting a few more cameras to trickle in over the next month or two - so come on out and ride. Beginner and experienced riders wanted. Just in - we are going to ride Wintercreek all day on Saturday (Intermediate and Advanced riders). Check out the video.
The details are in on SCOA Amazon Jungle Expedition. Every day I get more and more excited about this adventure. While it isn't for everyone, if you seek adventure - we have it. It is one thing to go to a South American resort and sleep in a bed, go zip lining, eat dinner on a table with white linen, river raft and check out the village. . . There ain't no resort. You catch and prepare some of your food. You live and learn the jungle. If it sounds intriguing, come join us Wednesday for free drinks on Wednesday at the Mountain Bar. Only a few of you are signed up - which means more drinks for us! If you cannot make it - no worries - be by your computer and we will stream the video and audio to you. This will be an excellent chance to speak with Mickey - our guide. He and a handful of his crew will be available by speakerphone to fill us in!
We are flying this weekend too!Click Here
We hear you some of you all would like some softer adventures. September 26 and 27 we will be in Santa Barbara horse back riding with picnic lunch, wine tasting and taking in an Indian Summer. We still have a few details to work out but please feel free to RSVP yes to let us know of your interest.
Scuba Diving Catalina on the Mr. "C" Labor Day Weekend is through Pacific Wilderness in San Pedro. It is $110 or so payable to them. When you call ask to speak to Jeff Smith and let him know you are with SCOA.
What are you doing for New Year's? Fancy cruising the Caribbean on a sailboat hoping from island to island in shorts, tevas and a tank top? http://www.scoaoutdoors.com/calendar/11187040/
