I am a film composer who also composes music for the stage, TV and the concert hall. I'm the winner of the 1998 Israeli Academy Award for Best Film Score. The film, "Dangerous Acts", won seven Academy Awards including Best Director.
I have quite a lot of experience in composing, arranging, orchestrating, conducting and performing music (both acoustic and MIDI) for feature films, short films, TV films, dramas and series, commercials, theater and dance.
Having come from a family of musicians (most of them with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra), I was naturally drawn into the world of music, and soon enough became very successful at it. On the basis of my early work, the late Maestro Leonard Bernstein became my patron and sponsored
my studies at New York University where I earned a Fine Arts Degree. I proceeded to win numerous awards and scholarships both in the US and in Israel.
Professionals in the industry have said about my music:
"Your music shows a lot of imagination and skill. I think you are very talented"
(Lalo Schifrin, Academy Award winning composer, "Mission: Impossible")
"I want to emphasize Ady's extraordinary talent as a film composer. He has a rare and special gift to give musical expression to visual images"
(Zbigniew Rybczynski, Academy Award winning director, "Tango")
"Yours is lovely music, Ady, and provides some hope for the future of film scoring, for one reason, because it gets away from the handful of tiresome and musically uninteresting clichés we are exposed to in virtually every new theatrical film. Your lyricism and humanity shine through"
(William H. Rosar, editor, "The Journal of Film Music")
I have composed over 30 film scores in Israel, the USA and Europe. I've written the music for numerous theater plays and dance performances, as well as for TV films and series. My talents are also employed by the advertising industry in TV, cinema and radio commercials and jingles.
The 2005 Park City Film Music Festival, a side festival of Sundance, honored me with a special screening of 3 films, by director Dominic De lay, for which I composed the music. The festival also granted these films the Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Film Music.
In May 2001 my concert piece "Piazzolla Song-Cycle" was premiered at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York, winning praise from the press. Since 2002, I have begun a fruitful working relationship with animator Gil Alkabetz of "Run Lola Run"'s fame, which has resulted, so far, in 3
award-winning films.
I teach and lecture on Film Music and Music History as faculty member at three prestigious Israeli colleges: the Film & TV Department at the Negev Academic College, the Animation Department at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, and the Animation Department at the Open University, Tel-Aviv.
I live in Yafo, the old city of Tel-Aviv, Israel, in a beautiful house near the old city port, with my wife, Bavat Marom, a world-renowned opera singer (www.bavatmarom.com), our 2 children Lyle and Noot and millions of cats.
Here's a clip from Shemi Zarhin's film "Dangerous Acts". My score for this excellent psychological thriller won the Israeli "Oscar" in 1998. In this scene, which is one of the film's highlights, Israel, a miserable man just released from prison, is about to jump from the roof of a building. In the building lives Zvia, a famous actress. Israel wants Zvia to forgive him. Only if she forgives him he will not jump. Will she forgive him?
Taken from Ady Cohen's Israeli-Oscar-winning score to the film "Dangerous Acts". Composed, Orchestrated and Conducted by Ady Cohen - Performed by Ady Cohen and the Ra'anana Symphony Orchestra.
Here's another clip: the Opening Titles sequence from the first season of the successful, award-winning Israeli TV series DEUS, with Israeli superstars Michael Lewis, Michael Moshonov and Adi Himelbloi. The music for the series was composed, arranged and performed by me. We are now working on the second season of this excellent series, and as soon as I have the new opening sequence I will post it as well. Enjoy!
