"Over the past year, FuzzFace frontman has established himself among Colchester's most enjoyable performers.
Playing at the Bull, in Crouch Street with his backing band, Toby Bull on horns, Matt Kelly on drums and Nelson on double bass, Ady demonstrated why he is so hotly-tipped just hours before entering the recording studio.
His vivid songs benefit from the band's unique and classy sound with its distant echoes of Neil Young or Nick Drake's Bryter Later.
Avoiding strum and self-pity, Ady writes pithy songs about love and his life that enthrall without descending to cliche. Melody can be found in every component of songs like Caroline and Pink Flamingos, from the soulful vocal lines, to the carefully crafted guitar parts.
If music is this good, why didn't this gig take place at the Hammersmith Apollo? Well Johnson lacks the bluster that gets people noticed, but it's his warmth that keeps his audience transfixed.
This was just one gig on an Essex evening, but his recording sessions might just produce something that will spread the word a bit further."

The Reverend is delighted to inform you that his bold new single ELIZABETH – composed in honour of Her Majesty the Queen’s 83rd Birthday - is OUT NOW through iTunes etc.
Featuring the bells, choir & organ of St Runwald’s Church, Colchester, it is a fortuitously-timed state of the nation address in Bb major. ELIZABETH is backed with HAND FOOT MOUTH, the Reverend’s response to the Swine Flu panic. Music doesn’t get more infectious than this – spread the dis-ease and download your copy now.
Rumour is that the Pied cow is closing today I'm afraid but if you're free on the 7th of May there's the music night I run at the Brewery tap in Sudbury Would be cool if you could make it and as I told you last time there would be probably a booking for you down there as well We're playing at the Bull open night tonight so we might see you down there
Hey man! Great to hear your recent performances. Looking forward to seeing you on 1st May then playing with you at McGinty's in Ips on 28th! Gav, www.thelullabys.com
Call in your flocks! Drain your wells! Batten down your hatches! The Reverend’s next apparition approaches fast! With his Phantom Notes now expanded to include a brass band, he headlines at COLCHESTER ARTS CENTRE on Friday 1st May. Don’t miss what promises to be his most beautiful and baffling performance to date.
Support comes from the stupendous ADY JOHNSON and the sublime Jake Murrells (Ragged String Band, Mahony).
