About me:
I was a professional touring musician up til the last few years when I've been concentrating on being a father....... and providing PA systems and sound engineering for all these amazing bands around Leeds and beyond. Music controls my life. I like Abba, I love Zappa and My Bloody Valentine sit nicely in the middle. I play bass,at least I did, and mandolin and keyboards with Led Zeppalike - a tribute band, obviously. Send me an IM!
Who I'd like to meet:
Stacey more often than ships that pass in the night, especially when we only collide once a month...........

Marissa Nadler + supports
may 3rd in the candle lit and historic Halifax Parish Church

Tickets can be bought on the night for £8 or via Ticketweb for £7.

Bar.

Support provided by the tender Butler Williams and the magnificent Maghribibeat.

The historic Halifax Parish Church will be candlelit for the evening, a perfect setting for Marissa's ethereal gothic tuneage. Photos of the venue can be found here. A little info about the church can be found here and here.

Marissa Nadler
“Joanna Newsom aside, Marissa Nadler is surely the most exquisite thing happening stateside right now.
” 4/5 Mojo

It’s not all that difficult to find beauty in life’s more joyful moments, but few artists are capable of doing the same for bleaker times. Excelling at a Fahey-esque fingerpicking technique, Nadler pays homage to some of the great early American blues players. She sings haunting chansons of maidens, the cowboy ditties of ranchers, and the funerary processions of mourners. On her fourth solo album, Little Hells, Marissa Nadler proves she’s well-acquainted with the splendour of sorrow and envelops the listener into those gauzy moods.

“In terms of songwriting, I think I’ve reached my most honest point ever,” says Marissa. “It’s not that I’m being overly confessional, but I feel like the songs on this album are more emotionally bare than anything I’ve done before.

While unquestionably stark in tone, the songs on Little Hells are also more sonically expansive than anything the Boston-based singer/guitarist has done previously. Recorded in Stamford, Connecticut, Little Hells has New York based producer Chris Coady at the helm. Having recently produced albums for TV On The Radio, Gang Gang Dance and Grizzly Bear amongst others, this album takes Marissa’s old-as-time songs and places them in a formidably modern context.

The album also features musicians Simone Pace (drummer from Blonde Redhead), multi-instrumentalist and longtime Marissa Nadler collaborator, Myl

That Fucking Tank was formed in 2004 for a one-off performance by friends-since-school Andy Abbott and James Islip who met over an owl. Andy plays a specially tuned baritone guitar through guitar and bass amplifiers, James plays a minimal drum kit. Their novel name, energetic performances and manish volume has seen them play all over Europe and the UK with brain-mangling regularity.

Hey! Panda are a Halifax based noise punk act with influences ranging from The Fall to Sonic Youth and The Rapture. Their live shows are are often riotous occassions and they have recently played several high profile support slots with bands such as The Young Knives, No Age and Yeasayer.

Garfunkel & Simon is the antifolk influenced solo project from Patrick of Monty Casino. His songs take in a wide range of subject matter icluding Politics, Television, Peter Crouch, Cycling, Greek Doctors, Bradford, Bradford City and Books. Over the course of the last year he has played with Johnny Foreigner, The Wind Whistles, Pulled Apart By Horses, and Sons and Daughters.

To cap the evening off there'll be a set from our very own Sneeze djs playing alt/indie/electro and whatever else takes their fancy right through until 3am.

Damo Suzuki is a legend! Best known for his stint as the legendary Krautrock pioneers Can as their singer in the 70s, Damo now tours the world to hook up with the best of local musicians to produce stunning sets of improvised music. We cannot stress how good this will be enough - you’ve never experienced anything like a Damo Suzuki show before, even if you’ve been to a Damo Suzuki show before! This extra special show will see Damo backed by the collective brilliance that is Quack Quack and Napoleon IIIrd.

Quack Quack simply the best live band Forest of Sound have ever seen - so much energy, so much musical invention, so much skill... well, it's almost obscene.

One man empassioned alt-pop legend with his reel-to-reel tape player, Napoleon IIIrd is a man of skewed melodies, bouncing beats and a big bucket of inventiveness... and is simply ace.

Friday: 13/3/2009 @ The Brudenell, Leeds. Doors 7.30pm.

Charlie Parr is from the same Duluth music scene that spawned the likes of Low and Haley Bonar, and his music delves deep into the back roads of American folk music, there’s hints of Robert Johnson, Nick Drake and Will Oldham in his playing, and a true from the heart power and clarity that is simply stunning. This guy is the real thing, and you can hear it in every note he plays, which would also explain why the people at the superb End of the Road festival ask him back every single year!

Neil McSweeney plays beautifully considered and perfectly restrained music that will delight fans of Low, Adrian Crowley, Nina Nastasia, Mark Kozelek, and Jason Molina.

Deftly fingerpicked folk loveliness from a local favourite - Michael Rossiter perfectly executes traditional folk as well as his own material, sings from his heart and gets the perfect sound from his guitar.

Sunday: 1/3/2009 @ The Packhorse, Leeds. Doors 8pm.
A Forest of Sound presentation in association. £5 adv / £6 on the door.
Tickets available at Jumbo Records, Crash Records, and We Got Tickets.

Hey Trev, just in case you're in the area...

..

Often described as veterans of the underground music scene, BILGE PUMP have been playing their idio(t)syncratic rock for over 15 years. As well as songs appearing on 7" and compilations, Bilge have released two tape only albums and have another two albums on Nottingham's Gringo Records. Popular with the late JOHN PEEL (i.e. the best DJ ever) they recorded two Peel sessions and got plenty of airtime on his Radio 1 show.

Two piece indie rockers from Leeds, PIFCO, comprises Steve on guitar and vocals, and Mary on drums and keyboards. They write prolifically and have a CD album out on Run Of The Mill Records. Radio 1's Huw Stephens played it on his show and decided it was his album of the week. Not bad.

Hauschka
Having studied classical piano for ten years, Dusseldorf-based pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann's work as Hauschka is based upon a playful exploration of the possibilities of the 'prepared' piano. His resulting tracks are vivid, unconventional pieces made in a spirit of playful research-enthusiasm, which he's taken around the world - in the USA with Múm, in Japan with Colleen, and a debut, sold-out London show with Max Richter. Hauschka's music is a thing of beauty - intertwined melodies and rythyms that flit between gorgeously lush and complex and stunning minimalism.

Gareth S. Brown
With influences as diverse as Eastern European folk music, funeral marches and jewellery boxes, Gareth creates gorgeous work of layered beauty with nods towards Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Michael Nyman as well as latter day travellers such as Max Richter, Yann Tiersen and Aphex Twin.

Saturday: 8/11/2008 @ The Holy Trinity Church, Leeds. Doors 8.30pm.
