You will love Afaliah too! One may be thrown in a tizzy by not getting her name correct, for it will soon be on our lips and in our heads, as this native Ohioan lays the soundtracks to our lives.
Brought up in artistic surroundings, it’s very easy to see that Afaliah was genetically wired to entertain us. Her mother and father – professional dancer and musician, respectively – laid the foundation for her aptness toward the arts. Before she barely knew herself, young Afaliah was already headlining performances at family gatherings and local talent shows.
With a childhood penchant for “bustin’ loose”, when most children were just beginning to get hooked on phonics, Afaliah was already a burgeoning child star in her own right. Though all this may well have paved the way to her deciding to make dancing and music a mainstay of her livelihood, one can clearly see that from an early age, Afaliah was determined to move to her own music.
Afaliah’s initial foray was with a different kind of music – one that was void of harmonies and melodies but nonetheless -- poetic and crafty. She earned notoriety in high school for busting up male dominated ciphers with her fiery emcee skills. These schoolyard victories transformed her into a young and iconic female emcee in the Columbus area, where she was known for packing local lounges and nightclubs, most of which she was under the legal age to enter. By the end of her senior year at Ohio State University, Afaliah had a BFA in Dance under her belt, a duffle bag with her belongings, a dream, and a one-way ticket to New York City.
From performances across the globe to international tours with Jive mega R&B artist, Joe, Afaliah has had her glimpses of the light in its kaleidoscopic, incandescent colors and knows that the day is coming when she will command a spotlight of her own. A member of the elite dance group, Rennie Harris’ Pure Movement and a seasoned dance choreographer – Afaliah has won the respect in the dance arena, now it’s time for her to take the music industry by the horns.
Afaliah has shared recording sessions with several major recording-artists and producers. She has penned songs for CBS soap opera- Guiding Light and for several advertising campaigns. Her song “In/Exhale” was featured on the internationally released album “Bringing It Home Volume 1”.
Her sassy, pop-savvy, poignant music is a natural stimulant -- a breath of fresh and resuscitative air to the airwaves - A dynamic and versatile songwriter, singer and dancer, with a beyond compelling artistic aura. Her explosive and soulful vocals will blow your mind and attune your hearing to good music - all in one sitting.
Great artists pull their inspiration from their surroundings. A lot of Afaliah’s music is based on real life run-ins and outs of love and life, but more than anything else, her true inspirations are quarantined in her 60G i-pod. Take a listen and you will hear Prince, Janet Jackson, Lauren Hill, Bjork, Missy Elliot, Minnie Ripperton, and Kenna thumping from the ear-buds.
There are many wonderful terms one could use to best describe this sensationally talented female. But none will truly capture what makes Afaliah so unique. Sensuous, soulful and alluring are words that have been used to describe her. But as fitting as these labels are, Afaliah’s creativity and talent run a bit deeper than surface clichés. She is superior. And one can say this without ever chancing an occasion of having to remove his or her foot from their mouth.
