"Trilingual Dance Sexperience Video" by Gerhard Senz aka Prcls
Affine Records is located in Europe, Austria, Vienna, V.I.E (just in case, for the airport shortcuts experts) and is the home of the Artists Dorian Concept, JSBL and The Clonious.
Behind the Scenes
Affine Records was founded in 2008 by a guy who sold english Premier League side Southhampton FC a few years ago after only 15 minutes to his old friend Joe Dassin. This young fellow also gained big fame with his Vitas Gerulaitis foundation to establish honeysuckers in the industrialized world. If you think this is strange stuff, please notice that the label owner with the “Carlos Valderrama attitude” is also responsible for founding the state Moldova (by the way: big thanks to Paradorn Srichaphan and Bananarama) and of course for his unforgotten contemporary peacock paintings.
The affine thing
Affinity, in etymology affinity is the opposite of infinity . These two words have the same root coming from the Latin: finis = end. “Affinity” meaning is near to the “finis” e.g. close to the “zero point” in a before assumed space. On the other hand, from the Latin, affinis = connected with, having things in common, and it is utilised to interpret the effective possibility that some substances can or cannot mix together, in terms of sympathies and antipathies.
Its megalomania meets modesty, creating down toned megalomania. It’s the irritation which causes clarity that evokes further irritation. Here comes the deepness of confuse funk chords, accompanied by a thundering bass cloud. Is it really modesty we are witnessing?
But do the modesty, the megalomania and the heavy synthesizer-bass sounds not irritate? They have a spatial clarity, there to irritate, but not. Should the estranged background voices be a message? No, not primarily. It’s modesty that takes centre stage supported by a straight bass drum and backed by insane jazz lines. This has got to be megalomania. But no, its roots lie in modesty. Although the deep keyboard chords are yet again tell tale signs of megalomania, an obvious sign of modest megalomania.
Do megalomania and modesty not irritate one another? The answer is no, they keep each other in balance. The heavy bass drum in-between the hectic keyboard solos and the dreamy clouds of sound accompanying them represent both modesty and megalomania. So here we go again.
Dorian Concept creates music. Dorian Concept is a modest megalomaniac.
JSBL
The abbreviation JSBL is neither a four-letter-word that can be looked up in dictionaries, nor the pin code to a secret bank account on the Cayman Islands. Jacob’s Salty & Bamboozling Ladder is a musical experience of the next dimension.
The Jacob’s ladder represents the way to heaven, that is a never-ending musical development. Sparing the religious connotation, its simply the symbolic character of this funky ladder that counts. Speaking of Funk, this ladder is a bit salty too- obviously the way up is hard and gets you well sweaty. Bamboozling, on the other hand, is characteristic of the band’s ability to surprise and reinvent. Regardless of the outcome being spontaneous or composed.
Jacob’s Salty & Bamboozling Ladder are specialists for a certain serious unseriosity, sticking Donald Trump, Michael Jackson and Brigitte Bardot in a room, letting them get drunk together. What counts is that JSBL’s juicy orange beats, minty green low ends and yummy purple middles provoke a certain spiciness that rushes through the body. This musical output culminates in their refreshingly unpretentious live performances- and the future releases at JSBL’s home label Affine Records.
THE CLONIOUS
Imagine running into The Clonious, that dude equipped with three headphones which directly interact with his musical epicentre. Think about an irresistible moment when a complex organic-mechanical clone process starts. A clone process which manifests in his very own, cartoonish superhero.
The Clonious, heavily engrossed in details and obsessive perfectionism is the protagonist of an offbeat and – above all – fictional concept. He elegantly puts together the apparent inconsiderable and the clearly essential elements, subsequently he breaks –music- into rhythm + harmonies to reach a point at which it is incontrovertible to discuss the perception that jazz is the mother of it all.
A soulsearcher and vinyl aficionado who wouldn’t mind to know how to smash a breakdance in a jam packed club, usually he ticks out without being asked anyhow though. He proved his qualities as DJ and producer during the Red Bull Music Academy 2007 where he jammed with the likes of Theo Parrish, Tony Allen, Ron Trent, Steve Spacek and Waajeed. In 2009 he got signed to San Francisco based Ubiquity Records releasing his long awaited debut EP “Adroit Adventures” in June. But there is more to come in the near future – watch out for his brandnew liveshow and of course for the debut longplayer “Between the Dots” (this fall on Ubiquity) as well as releases and collabos on his mothership label Affine Records.
Ultimately, his fresh and undogmatic approach gives a discreet hint about his young age. And that’s what’s up indeed. To say it with a keeganism (note: Kevin Keegan, former english football legend): Young Clonious, he’s young.
