About me:

WHAT'S NEW??
ATLANTA PRIDE on July 4th weekend.
If you are interested in going with affirm send a message with your name so we can add your name to the list.
The plans are to get hotel rooms together in order to save on the cost and we will be walking in the parade. The sooner you contact us the better!
Congratulations to our new Prom Queen, Josie aka Britney Spears!
AFFIRM youth wants to thank its BRAND NEW Board of Directors for all their hard work while the building was closed down. Also, we really appreciate the new massive TV, disco ball, and surround-sound system. (So all you kids out there reading this, make sure you thank them.)
Meetings are now held from 7pm-9pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Affirm Youth Center wishes to extend our sincere sympathy to the family, loved ones and friends of Sean Kennedy (1987 - 2007). Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
AFFIRM is located in Greenville, South Carolina to serve the nine counties that make up the Upstate. As you may already know, the Upstate is heavily populated with conservative Christians and outside of the city of Greenville is a primarily rural area. There are few organizations and businesses in the Upstate for GLBTQ individuals, and AFFIRM is the only organization dedicated to us, the youth.
AFFIRM was created in 1996 by several Upstate South Carolina citizens who desired to create a safe space for GLBTQ youth. Due to the political climate of the Upstate, the founding of such an organization was a groundbreaking event. Although we started small, we now have strong youth attendance at our weekly support group meetings and social outings.
Now GLBTQ youth have a safe and fun place to go and hang out with our friends and straight allies. We host three weekly meetings, so if you can't make it on one night then perhaps you can catch us at one of the other meetings. Tuesday evenings ( 7-9pm ) are open to the community and discussions focus on topics relevant to youth, including current events and issues in the GLBT community. These nights are more educational in nature and we'll sometimes have a guest speaker or two from the community. Wednesday evenings (7-9pm) are really open for whatever. Most of the time we just socialize or the youth council meets to plan future events. Finally, Fridays are fun days ( 7-9pm ). The center is open for games, internet or library usage, movies and more. Sometimes we go out bowling or downtown for coffee. We occasionally throw our own parties and lock-ins. Basically, just the normal stuff that kids like to do for fun. If you're a first timer, you'll feel more comfortable starting here. On top of our regular weekly events, we also throw an annual Gay (Alternative) Prom, go to local pride events (SC Pride and ATL Pride), and national conferences (HRC). It's a very laid back atmosphere. I think you'll find that everyone feels welcome and comfortable being themselves at the center.
What do I have to do in order to become a member of Affirm Youth? ~~~
1)Contact our Youth Director, John at (864) 467-9004 or at affirmyouth@affirmyouth.org
2)Go through a short interview to make sure you're not a creepy old person haha (Don't worry, we've all had to do it). The ages of our youth are 16 to 25 years old.
3)Get directions to the new location.
4)Come have a fun time.

ok, this is a long comment: I told you I'd find this out:
Time: Mon Mar 12 2007 08:00 PM to 09:45 PM
Location: McAlister Auditorium, Furman University
Organization: FUSAB
Description: On March 12th, 2007 at 8 pm the Kinsey Sicks will perform a Vegas-style Drag Show. EROS (Encouraging Respect of Sexualities), Residential Life Council, and FUSAB will be cosponsoring the event. The significance of a drag show varies over time and differs depending on sexuality. Within a heterosexual context, drag has a prominent, and often ignored, history in Shakespearean plays. Male actors donned the garments of women in order to portray them on stage. The cross-dressed man was a staple of Roman comedy (as evidenced by Plautus and Terrence). To stretch the tradition across the globe, the Chinese Opera and Japanese Kabuki and Noh-drama all feature male actors posing as women characters. The cultural implications of this type of program are then set in a viable context and are quite evident. Furthermore, within the GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender) community, the 20th Century brought with it the notion that homosexuality was some "inversion" of gender. This concept held that homosexuals were one sex trapped in the body of the opposing sex. The "inversion" of gender then expressed itself in art. Men then viewed female impersonation as liberating and oppressive: They were liberated that they could express their female selves; however, they were confined to the official roles by which they were understood within the scientific community. As this impersonation, or drag, evolved, it became part of a cultural tradition of satire, or "camp." It served the community as a way to satirize the dominant constructions of gender and sexual identity. It also served as a way to cope with the problems of living in a homophobic society through humor. Mid-century, Drag was the apex of "camp" expression in high gay culture. It was a way of not taking seriously what [gender] everyone else thought was fundamental. Susan Sontag contends that camp, alongside "jewish moral seriousness," is one of the two most important aesthetic modes of the 20th Century. Professor Marjorie Garber outlines, in her book Vested Interests, the history of drag since Shakespeare and she argues that drag always becomes an important cultural phenomenon when gender roles are called into question. Hence, the emergence of popular drag entertainers, she would argue, tells us something about gender, and this program, then, becomes an illustration of the drag show as an integral part of popular and current culture.
CREDENTIALS: "When THE KINSEY SICKS began in 1993, its founders were a group of refugees from successful careers as professionals and activists. Original member Ben Schatz ("Rachel") is a Harvard- trained civil rights lawyer, former Director of the National Gay and Lesbian Medical Association. Schatz created the first national AIDS legal project and authored Clinton's HIV policy during the 1992 presidential campaign. Irwin Keller ("Winnie") is a University of Chicago-trained lawyer and linguist and former director of the AIDS Legal Referral Panel of the San Francisco Bay Area. Keller authored Chicago's gay rights ordinance, passed into law in 1989. The KINSEY SICKS sound was sweetened in 1998 by the addition of the golden pipes of actor/singer/theatre educator Chris Dilley ("Trampolina"). Since 2004, the KINSEY SICKS have been joined by actor/singer Jeff Manabat ("Trixie"), a veteran San Francisco performer, previously seen in "When Pigs Fly" at the New Conservatory Theatre Center." According to the Kinsey Sicks official website (www.outmedia.com), they have performed at venues such as the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, the Nordstrom Recital Hall in Seattle, the Ogden Theatre in Denver, the Colony Theatre in South Beach, and the Wheeler Opera Hall in Aspen with various shows. In 2001, however, they debuted "Dragapella!" which receive critical acclaim and was nominated for a Lucille Lortel award (off-Broadway Tony) as Best Musical of 2001 and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Best Lyrics. The Sicks were also feature on 20/20 and CBS Early Show with Bryant Gumbel. In addition, they were the "subjects of a lengthy cover feature in the arts section of the New York Times." The Kinsey Sicks have won numerous a cappella awards and produced five albums. In 2006, they played an extensive engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton. Following the show "Dragapella," the four members (Rachel, Winnie, Trampolina, and Trixie) will host a panel discussion: "From Over-Achievas to Singing Drag Divas: How Four Men Fashioned Creative, Political and Glamorous Careers in a Highly Unqueer World."

I remember Kim and Alesha wanting to go - if anyone else is interested let me know. We should meet around 6:30 and carpool. This has created a lot of controversy so it will probably be crowded - we should get there early. If anyone needs a ride let me know.
