OVERVIEW
Artists For Humanity’s mission is to bridge economic, racial and social divisions by providing underserved youth with the keys to self-sufficiency through paid employment in the arts. What that means is that we employ Boston teens in five studios…to work at AFH is to create, express and explore as you do real projects for real clients. Founded in 1991, AFH has employed thousands of youth, and a chat with any of them would make you realize how rare an opportunity like this one is. We’re always looking for new recruits…here’s a little bit more about what we do.
AFH STUDIOS
Painting: Painting introduces new participants to AFH; here you’ll learn the basics of design, color and technique. Explore your identity and societal role in ways that you might not have thought you could. Your work could take the shape of gallery installations, corporate exhibits, huge public murals…you never know.
Photography: The AFH photography studio documents the reality of urban life and educates the community about the complexity and value of city experiences. Participants learn commercial, documentary and fine art photography while working in both traditional and digital platforms.
Graphics: Learn composition, graphic design and typography, color systems, pre-press production, and new media/electronic imaging though the latest professional software. With these skills, create signage, logos, album covers, clothing design and brand identity, product labels, and more.
Screen Printing: AFH artists produce high-quality, competitive products using such equipment as a mercury halogen screen exposure unit and a flash-curing dryer. The screen printing program provides participants with real business experience emphasizing quality and customer satisfaction.
Sculpture: AFH sculptors work with wood, metal, plastics, and a variety of natural and synthetic materials including found objects, giving new meaning to the concept of recycling. Familiarity with tools and building materials opens the door to fields as diverse as architectural model-making, theatrical set building, carpentry and construction.
WORK AT AFH - Artists For Humanity is hiring 14–17 year old Boston Public High School students. Orientation is held at the Artists For Humanity EpiCenter in Boston EVERY 1st AND 3rd TUESDAY OF THE MONTH AT 3:00 pm. After a 72 hour apprenticeship, get paid to make art for corporate and organizational clients. This is real-world experience with lots of opportunity for advancement.
