Sounds Like
"Wow. I don't know what just hit me. Psychodelica, trippy, meatloafish and The Doors are all mixed in there." -Tim Towner, The Daily Chorus
"...one of the Capital Region’s most original acts" -Metroland, Best of 2007
"The story of Aficionado is a perfect example of what’s wrong with music today. Here is a humble, extremely talented and ambitious group of musicians who truly have something worthwhile to share. But the recognition and fan base they should have is prevented by the commercial garbage fed through radio and honored at the Grammy Awards. Aficionado prove that quite often, the most important and original music is being made by those who work endlessly for what they love, but, unfortunately, are also the ones you’ve never heard of." - Jordan Blum, Delusions of Adequacy
"If you haven’t yet been swallowed by the clattering grandeur of an Aficionado show, then one spin of their self-produced Circus Music should be enough to prove that this isn’t some novelty act. Sure, there’s flute and French horn, burlesque and vaudevillian elements, even a bloody ragtime “Intermission”—but through angular time changes, searing guitar riffs and anthemic choruses, each idea remains delicate and subservient to a musical vision as singular as it is volatile." - Josh Potter, Metroland
Aficionado began playing together in 2004. We set out to do something different. Almost 5 years later, we're still here, still doing something different.
In the beginning, the bands' vision was pretty straight forward and aggressive. With influences like indie rock innovators At The Drive-In and underground punk gods Refused, Aficionado took towards a harder edge. However, during the first couple years, most members got pretty heavy into 70's era progressive rock, drawing a great deal of influence from bands such as Yes, Kansas, and King Crimson; who demonstrated that instrumentation and song structure can be out-of-the-ordinary, and songs can be musically complex, but the music can still listenable and enjoyable. With these influences in mind, the band headed in a more progressive direction. People tend to like when you can give something a label, so i guess you could call it "progressive-indie".
Without taking away from the intensity of the music, Aficionado began incorporating unconventional instrumentation such as flutes, horns, & mandolin into the songs. These instruments were added to compliment the already epic, over-the-top nature of the band's sound. Also backing up their big sound , was a theatrical and energetic live performance, something the band has prided itself on from the very beginning. Live performances set out to make every member of an audience feel included in the show. No standing with arms folded, looking bored here!

Also, pencil this date in...Friday Feb 26th...its going to be a bananas Six Gallery tour kickoff Columbus show...it would be great if you could be out Ohio-way for that one...
We experienced Aficionado at The Midpoint. I read the review. I'm really not sure putting a bunch of bands in a blender just find a comparison is fair to the musicians. As I listened to Aficionado, I thought to my self " I really can not categorize this bunch". Which is the best complement I can give to music. I went down to Cincy to hear something I have never heard before. I did hear Aficionado and I will not tell you "who it sounds like". The music creates an emotional response. You will feel it on your own. Half way through the set Kat says to me "I really can not categorize this bunch."
sweet dudes...i heard you guys kicked ass last night at ravari.
All Asia is sweet, and Im sure you got something cooking for the Albany date. Any chance you can hit up Sakes Alive about supporting the Rochester show?
