Balearic aficionados launch monthly Friday club The DJs behind Aficionado, the Sunday night session which has ran for more than 11 years in various venues around Manchester, have launched a new monthly Friday night. Humidor, held on the first Friday of every month at the newly opened Voodoo Lounge on Minshull Street, will see Manchester DJs Moonboots and Jason Boardman recreate the Balearic sound of Aficionado for which they are renowned and adapt it for the nightclub environment. Aficionado is merely resting rather than retired, the duo are concentrating all their efforts on Humidor for the foreseeable future, which they hope will fill a noticeable gap in the Manchester club scene left by the demise of Electric Chair, Development and Friends and Family over the last 18 months. “The time felt right to launch a Friday night,” says Boardman. “People have been complaining that there isn’t much happening in Manchester at the moment other than a couple of great nights at smaller venues, and we felt there was a real need to offer an alternative to the super-club ethos of nights like the Warehouse Project. Things like that have their place, but we really wanted to give people a night that would provide a fantastic atmosphere in an intimate venue. “ The intimate venue which will be home to Humidor is Voodoo Lounge, formerly Bookbinders, which has been refurbished and re-launched as a credible setting for a series of critically acclaimed DJs. Run by veteran Manchester DJ Andy Madhatter, the club has received a facelift and consequently a dramatic shift in music policy which will ensure that it becomes a unique space within the Manchester clubbing landsacpe. “When we were invited to play at Voodoo Lounge we jumped at the chance,” says Boardman. “It has a jazzy pedigree and retains a charm that’s unique to Manchester; it’s a basement jazz club with a bar, a dancefloor and a soundsystem. “And although Aficionado is just having a siesta rather than being gone for good, we knew instinctively that Voodoo Lounge would provide the perfect setting for what we do but it had to be a Friday. We really wanted to give people the opportunity to kick-start their weekend in style once a month, and not have to go into work with a hangover on a Monday morning.” The music policy that Jason and partner Moonboots are renowned for will be very much in evidence at Humidor, but, says Boardman, will be more dancefloor focused. Their constant sourcing of influential and inventive material will give Humidor its individual edge, but the familiar Balearic sounds will be complemented by what Boardman describes as, “found funk, disco, chuggers and acid house.” Guests lined up for the coming months will continue the Balearic vibe, with Lowlife residents Matthew and Jolyon arriving on Friday November 6th and acclaimed DJ, Producer and Altiplano resident Kelvin Andrews on Friday December 4th. Opening night guest on October 2nd is Phoreski who joins the proceedings following his excellent performances at the Electric Elephant Festival in Croatia and recent performance's on the White Isle. “Our playlists and our guests will very much reflect our musical tastes, we will remain true to our Balearic roots though the selections will be fitting for a Friday night club space,” says Boardman. “If anyone attended our performances at Electric Elephant in Croatia over the summer they will know just what to expect – we’ll still have that Balearic vibe, but with an explosive atmosphere, packed dancefloor and lots of smiling faces.” Humidor will be held on the first Friday of every month at Voodoo Lounge, 10 Minshull Street, Manchester from 10pm until late. Entry is £5 on the door. After years of digging, listening and loving music of all forms, Moonboots and Jason gambled to create a Sunday scene in Manchester. Laughed at by many, Sundays became the new Saturday pretty soon after. Playing anything good outside of the four-four mainstream they set about creating a cerebral soundtrack for minds and feet with a Balearic edge. Referencing the multi tempo playlist of Ku , Shoom and the Café del Mar, disco was added to the mix alongside electronic and folky oddities. Over the last ten years they have welcomed many guests to add their interpretation, playing in the early days for a pizza and a few pints on a genuine 70s DJ console for extra authenticity. Many have been welcomed back over the years as the night has moved venues, always keeping the Sunday vibe alive and causing many a Monday morning work hangover As Aficionado has developed the playlist has become all encompassing, new old things have been found, new, new things have been found, old things have been rediscovered and given a new lease of life. Ten years on, the search for the perfect Nado beat continues. http://www.myspace.com/aficionadomcr BIOG.. Moonboots and Jason Boardman host Sunday night session Aficionado. Aficionado is widely regarded as the only place to go to on a Sunday in Manchester. Here you can catch up with your mates after the weekends partying, or you can chill over a quiet pint or dance your ass off as the night progresses. Moon and Jason have been DJing together at Aficionado for the last 8 years in various venues around the rainy city with the event inspiring numerous imitators to start their own 'Balearic Soirees'. Aficionado's popularity is mainly due to the pairs unique and varied Balearic DJ style and musical knowledge. Aside from Aficionado, Jason Boardman has recorded and remixed as Truant for Paperecordings and Grand Central. Jason has also performed as a DJ in many countries, being resident at seminal clubs such as Yellow, Hard Times and the Hacienda. Moonboots compiled the excellent compilation LP Soundcolours 4 and DJs throughout the country. The Chemical Brothers cite Moon as an early influence and he is widely regarded as one of the most innovative Balearic dj's in the world alongside the legendary Alfredo. -
