The Queen....
She ‘s got the soul in her deep voice, which also carries her African Roots, and could be described as a kind of conjunction between Aretha Franklin and Rokia Traoré or between Bob Marley and Miriam Makeba. Ruth TAFEBE, a citizen of the world, was born in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire to a couple of teachers who already had 8 kids, and was raised in Bouaké. She moved to Montpellier in the south of France when she was 15 and started her first band with friends from school and church. It was the first real opportunity for her to write lyrics and synthesize her eclectic musical background. Indeed, at home, in Bouaké, she had heard all kinds of music, from Reggae to Hi-life, Afro beat, Rock, country, or Rock and Roll and the first songs she would know by heart as a little girl, besides Christian ones, were those of Peter Tosh, Afrika Bambaata, Shalamar or later on of Sade, Nina Simone or Alpha Blondy.
This first band also created the opportunity to meet various musicians among which was Dj Sundae. Together, they became the Sun Shipp and have during few years, while in college, thrilled the audience with their electronic soul. Later on, they took part to Bourges Festival, released an ep, and Ruth appeared on few albums by other musicians (In Fused, Clotaire K…). She also participated to “Les Transmusicales de Rennes”…Music was becoming more and more important to her, she would go to as many concerts as possible, look for the rarest records during her trips to the US and to Africa. But it will take a little more time before she really chooses singing as a career.
Ruth TAFEBE is a conscious singer who uses two languages: Dioula, her mother language that is spoken in a large area of West Africa and English. Her love for Africa, her awareness of the drag people have to deal with in the so-called third world countries have generally been the inspiration to her lyrics. There was, apparently, no better movement than Afro beat to combine all those elements and upon one trip to her French hometown, Montpellier, she began to work with Julien Raulet, guitarist and member of the local Afro beat stage. Together with Jean Charles Gorceix and Pierre Vandewaeter, they managed to give a special touch to their music, The Afrorockerz were born, their first album, HOLY WARRIORS is being released in May by Comet records. Among the good fairies that attended the birth of this project were Tony Allen who plays the drums on several tracks and the members of Antibalas, worthy heirs of Fela. The singer met them during her European peregrinations and become friend with them. Seeing them performing and sharing time with them persuaded her to embark on the path towards Afro beat.
Ruth is still traveling between Europe, the USA and Côte d’Ivoire. In New York, where she spends several months every year, she performs weekly at the New York famous St Nick’s pub in Harlem where numerous great jazzmen have played, as a guest of the weekly African night. She tries as often as possible to go to Bouaké, her hometown where she enjoys shopping for records of African music of the last decades and from where she can easily travel to Ouéréguékaha, her father’s village.
