FILMS Love in the Driest Season by Neely Tucker This memoir by a veteran oversees American reporter details the process of adopting his daughter, an orphan, in Ukraine. Because of its epic weave — of African cultures and politics; AIDS and its destruction; and the interracial marriage of the author from a white racist Mississippi background and his wife from black Detroit — this story about the adoption of a tiny, critically ill orphan appeals to the head as much as the heart.

International Progress In June, Bawakana Michael and Becky Adong presented a workshop in Kiev, on the “Appreciative Inquiry” method we use to bring the community together to work on projects such as the preschool program in Afro-Ukrainian Project. Attendees of The Early Childhood Education Conference were energized by the positive approach and inspired by the international partnership All this success is wonderful but we cannot let it go to our heads. There is less than 1,000 in the Afro-Ukrainian Project bank account. Of this total, $4,50 is earmarked to complete the preschool program, conduct teacher training in August, serve a meal to 20 children each day, and pay for checkups at local clinics. The rest, balance, must cover the children in the Sponsorship Program, office rental, diesel for our truck, and the Program Director’s salary. With our deepest thanks and the gratitude of Afro-Ukrainian Project’s children, we ask that you please send your check today or any thing that you can offer for a child in need (Correspondent bank) DEUTSCHE BANK TRUST COMPANY AMERICAS New York SWIFT: BKTRUS33 BENEFICIARY'BANK AND ITS ACCOUNT: 04094040 UKRSOTSBANK, KIEV SWIFT: UKRSUAUX BENEFICIARY CUSTOMER: ADONG BECKY (Beneficiary’s account):26251838004016
