So what am I all about? Well...
"Robert’s boyfriend is going through some changes…
Robert never wanted to date someone with disabilities. Despite having cerebral palsy himself Robert is as prejudiced as the next man. He never wanted anyone to look at him with a disabled boyfriend and think ‘Aren’t they cute.’ But then he meets Nathan. Can Robert get past his own prejudices – as well as everyone else’s?
On their first date Robert and Nathan go to the G8 at Gleneagles and end up in the back of a police van. On their second date Nathan admits that physically he is still a woman. On their fifth date Nathan asks Robert if he will come and keep him company while he has gender-realignment surgery. None of this could be described as cute…
One year later, and after an affair, a threesome, a trip to America’s only legal nude beach and attending the wedding of drag-extraordinaire Pusilla, the two men are refused entry to Alton Towers because they don’t have a carer. How can they persuade the ticket inspector that they are quite adult enough to tackle Nemesis on their own?
The audience and the couple’s ticket inspector nemesis are taken on a magical, theatrical rollercoaster ride through Robert and Nathan’s relationship - how they met, how they got here, and why they most definitely don’t need a carer. The story is funny and sad, beautiful and shocking, true and false. And it ends on the log flume.
Based on some true stories…
The story is inspired by incidents from the life of performer Robert Softley, and embellished outrageously by Amnesty Award winning writer Stephen Keyworth. Robert Softley was chosen for the BBC Talent Fund's search for disabled actors. Currently working on a new film with Ewan Marshall, producer of BBC’s Desperados, he has appeared in BBC Scotland’s River City; and Radio 4’s Island Blue.
Stephen’s credits include the Royal Exchange Theatre and Radio 4, and he is currently writing for EastEnders and Casualty as one of 8 writers on the 2006 BBC Writers Academy. As artistic director of 5065 Lift in 2005 he filled the London Eye with comedy, theatre and music for Flight 5065, a one night arts extravaganza. In 2004 5065 Lift presented 10 new plays in a portable elevator venue based in the Pleasance Courtyard: “The very confines of this space fuel the imagination…the standard of writing is so very high, I can’t recommend it enough.” – Scotland on Sunday.
The play incorporates Robert Softley’s genuine correspondence with Alton Towers and the true story of the policeman George Bush ran into on his bike at Gleneagles…
