Age of Chance -
A Short History:
4-piece formed in Leeds, England in the early 1980s.
The four brought together a broad spectrum of diverse influences, notably loud, screaming guitars, bass-feedback, old-school Hiphop, Mutant Disco, Northern Soul and New York avant-noise.
Early live shows resembled confrontational Happenings, rarely lasting beyond 20 minutes, their sonic palette hewn from 2 guitars, a snare-drum and a tom-tom.
Released 2 singles, Motorcity and Bible of the Beats then a 12" compilation of the two, The Twilight World of Sonic Disco on their own Riot Bible label. Next came the incendiary contribution to the now famous/infamous (depending on your viewpint) C86 collection, From Now On This Will Be Your God before giving Prince's Kiss the Metallic K.O. on a John Peel radio session, thrusting the band into a wider media-spotlight, and onto Sheffield's Fon (Fuck Off Nazi) label.
The Kiss Sessions in Autumn '86 at Fonstudios, proved to be a turning point, not least in their deployment of the newly developed Akai S900 sampler, considerably expanding the range of aural possibilities at their disposal.
Also recorded at this time was the now legendary Kisspower. A 12" musical love-letter to the band's heroes, this was the first sample-fest of it's kind to see the light of day, beating the JAMMS 'All You Need is Love' and Coldcut's 'Say Kids, What Time Is It?' to the cutting-room by at least 6 months.
Next, they brought in turntablist DJ Powercut (aka Noel Watson), incorporating his deck-skills into their live sets, as well as in the studio. Signed to Virgin records, and released the One Thousand Years of Trouble album, arguably their finest moment. This recording spawned the Public Enemy remix of Take It! and the band's own destruction/reconstruction of Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Noise, entitled Let There Be Sonic War Sculpture, amongst others.
