Aging Youth Productions is a group of music lovers who began a production team to showcase music from Singapore. It was mainly born out of frustration amongst a group of friends, finding the chance to play at concerts to be extremely elusive. Thus, we decided to take the bull by its horns to organise our own gigs rather than to wait for someone’s handout.
Events
It all started with this event we organised. We invited our friends to play in the gig Spread The Love on Sunday 21 March 2004 at Soul Entertainment Pub, off Muhd Sultan Road. Held on a quiet night for the pub, we managed to make it a success, pulling in 80% of its maximum capacity.
The concept of the event was to showcase different genres of rock music, running the gamut from indie rock to 80’s hard rock to an acoustic folk set. And we have been doing this event as our annual flagship event.
These days, we still do organise gigs. However, we choose to focus on quality than quantity so the frequencies of our events are lower than our peers as well.
The Aging Youth
After a failed attempt to hold regular event nights in May 2004, we decided to re-invent ourselves to stand out among our contemporaries. We developed an online web-zine that is dedicated to both Singapore and foreign music. It is a conscious decision to feature artists of a global scale as well, emphasizing the fact that Singaporean musicians are no way inferior to their foreign counterparts. Artists who stand out for their innovativeness and the ability to creative emotive music have been featured in past issues. The Observatory, furniture, Electrico, the American Analog Set are just some of the acts which have appeared in our web-zine previously.
Launched in July 2004, the web-zine targets the discerning music lover, aiming to deliver an entertaining and intellectual read. Every issue is updated monthly with weekly updates on news about Singapore bands/ artists. Artist interviews and album reviews in the web-zine serve to inform the public about our own artists, allowing their fan-base to delve into the minds of their favourite acts.
In June 2007, we've revamped the site once more. In this current layout, we've gotten rid of the web-zine format. However, we are still retaining our interviews and reviews. All these articles will be updated on an as-and-when basis. So keep checking out our website
Record LabelB-Quartet - The Smitten Bard (AYRCD-01)
In May 2005, we help our good friends B-Quartet out by releasing their debut EP The Smitten Bard under our fledging indie record label, Aging Youth Records.
The EP garnered rave reviews in our national paper, The Straits Times and secured airplay on radio stations such as POWER 98FM and Perfect 10 98.7FM. Singapore DJ legend X'Ho has played them on his morning show on Lush 99.5FM as well.
For Good compilation (AYRCD-02)
In 2006, we have released a compilation album, featuring Singapore's hottest and most popular acts in partnership with Music For Good, a charity organisation helping disadvantaged children. For Good contains contributions by Electrico, The Observatory, B-Quartet, Stoned Revivals, Documentary In Amber, Lunarin and many more. All proceeds of the album goes to fund Music For Good's activities.
Documentary In Amber - Documentary In Amber (AYRCD-03)
In April 2007, fledging post-rock quartet, Documentary In Amber has joined us to be under our stable of artistes. They release a 5 track self-titled EP, featuring a collaboration with Bani Haykal of B-Quartet.
B-Quartet - Tomorrow Is Our Permanent Address (AYRCD-04)
Named after an e. e. cummings poem, Tomorrow Is Our Permanent Address is released in January 2008 under Aging Youth Records. The album contains fan favourites such as 'Shoebox' and 'Kleptomania' and a new arrangement of their live favourite 'Alphanumeric'.
Recorded at Snakeweed Acoustic Lab by Leonard Soosay and mastered at Scott Hull Mastering, NYC, USA by Scott Hull, the album is a collection of songs which blends the dynamic live performing of the band along with its experimental edge. Incorporating electronic elements into their usual mish-mash of jazz, alternative rock and pop, B-Quartet adds a different flavour in their already-eclectic style of musicianship.
Zero Sequence - Flight Of Transcendence (AYRCD-05)
After 18 months of production at Snakeweed Acoustic Lab by Leonard Soosay and Zero Sequence, Flight Of Transcendence is released in April 2008. Mastered at Scott Hull Mastering, NYC, USA by Scott Hull, the album sees the sextet incorporate their dynamite live performance with top-notch studio wizardry. Zero Sequence pays homage to their influences such as Dream Theater, Yes and Spock’s Beard along with classic rock giants like Pink Floyd, Rush, Toto, etc.
Hard-rocking and epic, their sophomore full-length outing showcases the band’s strength in crafting memorable riffs and distinct melodies. The ambitious 21-minute, 6-part suite ’The Devil’s Door’ lulls you in with intricate piano passages before plunging you into a rollercoaster ride of sonic mayhem. Dedicated to keyboardist Ezal’s late father, ’Gone Too Soon’ is a delicate rock ballad which invokes a sense of loss and tenderness.
Various Artists - For Good: Ballyhoo!!! (AYRCD-06)
A labour of love by Music For Good, this compilation album marks a second collaboration between Aging Youth Records and non-profit arts organisation Music For Good. This release showcases Singapore’s hottest young bands to look out for in 2008.
For Good: Ballyhoo!!! features songs from upcoming bands like Bismuth, S.P.O.N.G.E. and Peepshow. All but one song were recorded at The Void @ Music For Good by producer and engineer Nick Chan, it is a showcase of the talented and energetic new blood that continues to spill out from our lovely shores. Get ready to throw away the notion that home grown music is a dead fish, and be pleasantly surprised to uncover the fragrant tunes of the youthful underground.
Allura - Wake Up And Smell The Seaweed (AYRCD-07)
Recorded at Snakeweed Acoustic Lab by Leonard Soosay and mastered at Scott Hull Mastering, NYC, USA by Scott Hull, this EP is a collection of songs which captures the high-octane live performance of the youthful band. It is a celebration of one of the hottest emerging young acts in Singapore.
Rocking and refreshing, Allura’s debut EP is a tantalising taste of bigger things to come. From the word go, Allura draws you into their world of up-tempo rock with the opening ‘Liberty with Wings’. The rest of the ride is a riot punctuated by the mood inducing ‘Gamajazillion’ and finally ending with the stadium-rousing anthem of ‘Ladeda’. Wake Up And Smell The Seaweed will suck you into the whirlpool of youthful vibrancy, with the almost pixie-like quality of front woman Inch Chua, flanked delicately by the furious but precise guitar stabs of guitarists Aaron Wong and Mark John and supported by the explosive rhythm machine of Low Han Quan and punchy bass growl of Matthew Yap.
The EP defies any attempts to be submerged into the depths of boring rock. Uplifting and emotionally addictive, their debut outing delivers candy-sweet pop melodies and, leaving the listener craving for more.
