The purpose of the Air Guitar World Championships is to promote world peace. According to the
ideology of the air guitar, wars end, global warming stops, and all the other bad things disappear if
everybody in the world plays air guitar.
What started as a joke in 1996, has grown into a seriously fun, semi-absurd performance art that appeals to a wide international audience and media. The peaceful message of Air Guitar is nowadays passed on all around in the world: in 2009 the invisible instrument screeched in 20 countries across the Globe.
Air guitar playing is about surrending yourself to the power of music without an actual instrument. It neither requires specific places of performance or skill. Therefore, everybody is equally invited to play the air guitar, regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation or social status.
The 15th anniversary of Air Guitar World Championships will be celebrated on 25-28 August 2010 in Oulu. More information on www.airguitarworldchampionships.com.
