Ahmedian ramblings:
"Even if I remain marginal, and perhaps what is on the margins determines more than one would expect, I hope to contribute to music works of a certain conceptual ambition that is entrenched both in the musical and cultural heritages that I arise from and in the depths of my own dreams and mental noise.
Perhaps music and art, and every aspect of the cultural heritage, require critical progress and thoughtful innovation, but always with a rigorous and persistent awareness of where one comes from and where one resides.
Experimental and avant-garde music, amongst other so-called 'styles', could often be 'best' when they 'seem' explicitly aware, in their very style, presentation and content, of their own heritage, including the rules they may choose to break. And this 'breaking' or 'breaching' should ideally arrive at carefully determined points, always engaging strategically. These are just my own simple injunctions to be careful, detailed and informed, as well as free. Matters of taste.
The notions of education, reading, writing, heritage, history, technological medium, and the curious, intelligent childhood attitude (which adults should embrace always and all the time, most especially in 'serious' situations, and which is the attitude of Philosophy) are endemic in my work.
In this work therefore, I pay homage to a curious rigour, and hence two important pieces to be eventually published specifically refer to 'Kiwi Kids' and 'Cairo Kids': this is then a labelled refrence to all the adult kids in the world and to the adult kids of the future: today's children. I hope to succeed in offering something of value to someone somewhere, and to provoke even a moment of free-flowing, yet self-aware, imagination."

Artist info:
Ahmed Tarek Bahgat Abaza was born December 1984, in Cairo, Egypt to Tarek Bahgat Soliman Abaza and Ola Ahmed Abd-El-Latif Kamel. His full traditional name is 'Ahmed Tarek Bahgat Soliman Atia Boghdady Hassan Abaza'. Abaza moved with his immediate family to Christchurch, New Zealand in September 1996, where he still resides.
Abaza had no formal training in music and showed no interest in composition during his childhood. However, at the dawn of the year 2000, when aged 15, he watched live coverage of Jean Michel Jarre's multimedia performance concert, 'The Twelve Dreams of the Sun', held in front of the Great Pyramids of Giza. This multifaceted performance impressed him, and a passion for electronic music and visual art quickly thrived. In the same year, Abaza composed approximately 8 pieces, at least one of which remains part of planned releases.
Further, the works of artists like Autechre, Laurie Anderson, Boards of Canada, Philip Glass, Aphex Twin, Bjork and Vangelis became strong inspirations. In 2007, Abaza began to take seriously his prospects as a composer and took the surname 'Ola-abaza' as a professional artist name, combining his mother's first name [Ola (Arabic) = 'high rank', 'supreme rank', 'hieght'] with his family name in order to avoid confusion with other members of the Abaza Family. In late 2009, he additionally adopted the DJ performance name 'DJ Tympan' [Tympan (Old French) = 'to criticise', 'to ridicule publicly'].
In the same year, Abaza conceived of a project now entitled 'Musical Education', which uses most of his works since the year 2000 dramatically rearranged and reproduced, but often true to the original scores. In late 2008, Abaza added to his plans and decided to compose a new work to be released before 'Musical Education', which was originally planned as a debut publication. He then conceived of 'Practic Fast', a work consisting of four compositions.
In early 2010 Abaza plans two publications: an Internet-based release of the EP 'Practic Fast', and two freely downloadable tracks from 'Musical Education'. A debut live performance will also be held in Christchurch, New Zealand.
In addition to musical composition and production, Abaza is an academic holding a BA in Sociology and Political Science. His academic interests include Language, Process Metaphysics, Social Philosophy, Structure and Process, and Middle East Politics. Abaza has worked for the University of Canterbury's Sociology and Anthropology Department in New Zealand as an Assessor (2006-2008) and has also worked teaching English.
Currently, he is doing postgraduate work in the fields of Philosophical Logic and the Philosophy of Language. Alongside academic study and musical composition, Abaza works as a Research Assistant. He also writes prose, poetry and experiments with digital art imagery.
