AINIKE is a Toronto-based percussion & instrument ensemble rooted in the polyrhythmic, highly energetic music of the Malinke people of Guinea, West Africa. Meaning “thank you” in the Malinke language, AINIKE performs a repertoire of traditional rhythms infused with an original sound created through the diversity of its members’ musical backgrounds, the addition of non-traditional instruments and arrangements, and the influence of a modern and urban aesthetic – one which incorporates our varied influences, all the while maintaining respect for the tradition of Malinke music. AINIKE is led by Karen Hack, band leader and djembe player.
AINIKE brings not only intensity, fluid playing style, and originality to their music, but as well, and perhaps most importantly, an unbridled love of playing. Their captivating performance energy continues to inspire audiences throughout southern Ontario and their following deepens with each show.
