The seeds for Air Traffic Controller were firmly planted the day Dave Munro (the band’s lead singer/songwriter) left his home in Malden, MA to join the US Navy. While stationed nearly 2,000 miles away in Puerto Rico, Munro’s relationship with his high school sweetheart began to deteriorate. While struggling to keep the flame alive during his enlistment, Munro found solace in music. Armed with just a handful of chords taught to him by his older brothers, Munro’s songwriting abilities quickly blossomed. Soon, he was writing at a furious pace and recording mind-blowing, intricate songs with charming melodies and picture perfect lyrics. Armed with nothing more than his voice, a few instruments, and a 4-track recorder, Munro’s creative arrangements rivaled that of work done in a professional studio. At the urging of his brother, and musical mentor, Richie (Air Traffic Controller’s drummer), Munro sent a tape back home and it soon caught on like wild fire among his friends and family. Upon returning home to a growing number of people thirsting for more music, Dave and his brother began building a basement studio. Within months they were hunkered down recording together with one goal in mind…a full length studio album.
Not long into the process, Munro’s friend got his hands on some new tracks and eagerly went in search of a producer to kick the project into high gear. The producer he found was one of Munro’s favorite Power-pop artists, Bleu (also known for collaborating with chart-toppers Jonas Brothers, Hanson, Evan Taubenfeld, Boys Like Girls). With little time or money, they recorded in a lake house outside of Boston and turned out a Pop-rock masterpiece with sounds evoking the vocal quality of Jason Mraz, the folksy rock of Tom Petty, with the edgey pop stylings of the All-American Rejects, the grandiose arrangements of the Beach Boys legendary Pet Sounds album, and the straight-talk storytelling of Paul Simon. With the album in hand, Munro pulled in some of his closest friends and officially formed Air Traffic Controller (Dave Munro, Rich Munro, KMD, Steve Scott, & Randy Rock).
Currently, Air Traffic Controller is taking Boston and New England by storm. Their music has been featured on numerous radio stations, a variety of websites, and has most recently caught the attention of MTV, who nominated Air Traffic Controller for the 2009 Best Breakout Boston Artist Award.
Air Traffic Controller has recently finalized a deal with the newly formed Sugarpop Records and the digital release of their debut album, “The One” is scheduled for December 8, 2009.
