The origins of Swiss band AIX date back to November 1997 when Roger Schmidiger and Phil Noirjean teamed up and began writing their own songs. Their creative influences lay in the British and French popular music of the 1980s. So they decided to write their lyrics in English and give the band a French name (derived from Aix-en-Provence).
During its early years AIX comprised keyboard, guitars and lead vocals, with the important addition of a sequencer.
Drummer Stephan Amport joined in the summer of 1999, and in 2000 the trio recorded its first demo disc ("Visit") featuring five songs – all of them own compositions. Successful concerts followed at top venues, including the acclaimed Zurich club "Abart".
In the autumn of 2003 AIX performed as the support group with established cult band Phillip Boa & the Voodoo Club on a tour of Germany, attracting some 10,000 spectators. For this tour AIX recorded its mini-CD "Compact AIXtracks", which was released on the Swiss Thunderdome label and led to a recording contract.
In November 2006, guitarist/vocalist Roger Schmidiger left the band and was replaced by Lawrence Farmer. Bassist Rolf Balsiger joined AIX at the same time. Now enlarged to a quartet, AIX composed new song material, discarded the sequencer and changed to a more melancholic/rock style musical direction.
Co-founder Phil Noirjean left the band in 2008 to concentrate on his other project (FAQ). In 2009 Joakim Maeder (formerly with Little Big Men) took over lead vocals, and another new member – keyboarder Fabio Lorenzet also joined the band.
The brand new AIX formation is currently (August 2009) recording its first demo CD and will be making its live debut on New Year's Eve in Burgdorf.
