About me:
Akashic Books is a Brooklyn-based independent company dedicated to publishing urban literary fiction and political nonfiction by authors who are either ignored by the mainstream, or who have no interest in working within the ever-consolidating ranks of the major corporate publishers.

Glenlivet, Johnny? I'd have thought you were a Talisker man. It's snowing here in Oxford, MS (on Faulkner's grave and all). I hope you guys are well these days.

Akashic rocks! When Sir Robert Knightly invited us to contribute to Queens Noir, our only question was "where do we sign?"

Oh, look for Johnny Temple in one of our future books. Er, his name anyway. Although he made enough of an impression on us to inspire one helluva protoganist.

Thanks for the friendship...

Latest Review

This complex and deftly plotted tale of intrigue centers on the lives of Vietnamese and Americans caught up in dramatic events. It follows these characters’ actions and their efforts to protect themselves and their loved ones and to pursue their democratic goals. The story plays against the background of the great events of the time. We are led inside pagodas, university halls, American military posts and private homes—all venues with which the novelist is perfectly familiar. Nor are we spared the grisly details of anti-democratic repression. The author displays special powers of evocative language, bringing his characters and their world alive.

A major theme of the novel is betrayal—of individuals, of the democratic aspirations of the Vietnamese people, of Americans misled by their government, and of betrayal of truth itself.

Pablo Neruda

"POETRY"

And it was at that age...Poetry arrived
in search of me. I don't know, I don't know where
it came from, from winter or a river.
I don't know how or when,
no, they were not voices, they were not
words, nor silence,
but from a street I was summoned,
from the branches of night,
abruptly from the others,
among violent fires
or returning alone,
there I was without a face
and it touched me.

--------

"Poesia"

Y fue a esa edad... Llegó la poesía
a buscarme. No sé, no sé de dónde
salió, de invierno o río.
No sé cómo ni cuándo,
no, no eran voces, no eran
palabras, ni silencio,
pero desde una calle me llamaba,
desde las ramas de la noche,
de pronto entre los otros,
entre fuegos violentos
o regresando solo,
allí estaba sin rostro
y me tocaba.
