Nu-disco, retro house, Chicago/acid/jacking house, cosmic/balearic, italo, french touch, techno, deep/dub disco, punk-funk, electro, psychedelic - call it what you will, it's hard to deny these internationalist sounds have reinvigorated Boston's dance scene. Encompassing these sub-genres and more, Akult - a free monthly event at Good Life Bar in Boston, has become something of a destination spot for top, up and coming New York and European artists looking to spread the sound of a burgeoning scene. For fans of contemporary disco/house artists Hercules & Love Affair (DFA), a poster child for this movement, Akult is probably the first place you heard them. While many people are seeing these terms for the first time, this is the music of a massive undercurrent in modern dance music and in cue to be the next really great thing. Although the music can be considered underground, much of it crosses over and various walks of life can relate to and enjoy it. With that said, the primary reason for a party is fun, and although Akult may be for the discerning palette, the events organizers have not forgotten that.
The Downtown-crossing dance night has recently seen the likes of DFA recording artists Holy Ghost! & Runaway, nu-disco pioneer Brennan Green (Balihu, Modal,
Bearfunk), visionary producer Lee Douglas (Rong, Wurst Edits,Editions Disco), house taste-maker Nick Chacona (Grayhound, 2020 Vision, Internasjonal) and a handful of other respected forward–thinking local deejays.
To those who feel that bringing disco and rock elements into
Contemporary dance music is holding the genre back and attracting the "wrong" crowd - take into account that techno, house and especially
disco used to be dirty words just a short time ago amongst younger
music fans. Seeing a group of 150+ going crazy for electro-jams and
dancing late into the night to disco and house classics is a fantastic
breath of fresh air. Exciting times lie ahead for the Boston dance
scene and it's great to see so many new fans packing the city's most
unique dance night.
Upon entering Akult expect to find hipster kids, older and wiser dance
and disco freaks, die-hard house heads, confused yuppies, Chinatown
regulars and break-dancers all converging and conversing. Resident DJ
Brenden Wesley is known for his eclectic mix of disco-tinged house
with '80s highlights, indie-dance/DFA style electro-punk-funk, retro
and classic house, techno & nu-disco plus some of the best rare disco/edits gems you've NEVER heard. Newly crowned resident DJ John Barera (FTW) promises to keep it rocking with a varied and funky set of old-meets-new-school flavor. A big supporter of the Chicago sound, he brings a contemporary European influence as well. Expect Electro, funk, house and dance classics/unclassics dropped though an excellent
subsystem onto an down-for-it crowd.
This October 18th special guest and DFA recording Artists Runaway, return as they continue to promote their massive new release "Brooklyn Club Jam". They were here a year ago and rocked the house. This will be even better;) NOT TO BE MISSED.
