  • Bio

Love Affairs and Light Years Akute are a threesome from the ancient Belarusian city of Mogilev: Stanislav Mytnik (vocals and guitar), Roman Zhygarev (bass, vocals), and Pavel Filatov (drums). Formed three years ago on the ashes of local punk ensemble Glucki, this outfit has - in more recent times - moved away from amateurish cacophony, often under the influence of Western collectives. Put differently, the members of Akute have a special affection for New Order, The Cure, Placebo, The Killers, and Interpol. That strain of melodic, often melancholy rock is clear inAkute's discography to this day. Lyrically, however, the band takes its lead from closer sources - whilst singing in their native tongue. Mytnik, Zhygarev, and Filatov are especially fond of Soviet sci-fi authors Arkadii and Boris Strugatskii. That literary duo is best known to a US readership through the 1970s' screen adaptations of their work directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. Many of us, however, need not necessarily delve so deep into Slavic tradition, since Akute declare an equal enthusiasm for the novels of Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury. This penchant for cosmic narratives is front and center with the band's debut album; in English the title reads as "Girls and Outer Space." One Belarusian publication began its analysis of the CD's equally "spacey" artwork: "It's all done fashionably, in the sense that everything looks stylish - but you can't make a damn thing out!" This lack of clarity, associated with both private relationships and open vistas, has been underscored by other press outlets. The songs are about loneliness and the incomprehensibility of everything... "The lyrics are all about outer space, the stars, sky, and other ethereal stuff. In reality, though, the songs concern loneliness and the incomprehensibility of everything..." And indeed the theme of isolation emerges in many of the tracks. Likened by Mogilev journalists to homespun rockers Petlia Pristrastiia, these musicians have gone on to frame the same issue of social fumbling in existential terms. Put differently, they see little cause for comfort or bravery in either love or intergalactic loneliness. Movement into (or away from!) the world is movement into doubt. Hence the lack of focus. Zhygarev notes: "The cosmos involves the grandest dimensions known to man. Our entire planet, comparatively speaking, is nothing but a speck of dust. Anybody who finds themselves in outer space [amid that emptiness], will unavoidably display his true self. He'll show himself to be a joker or a coward; a hero or a villain. In outer space, anybody who lies to themselves will have no chance of survival." Lovers and members of modern society appear to face similar challenges.
