Hey Wade,
This painting was done by the famous Civil War artist Don Troiani which was published in his book titled "Soldiers in America". The painting is based on the visual account of Rueben Potter seeing the Mexican Army retreating from the battle of San Jacinto near San Antonio in 1836. Like most armies of the period every soldier (in theory) was suppose to receive a white fatigue jacket and pants for work and offduty. Also take into account the weather in south Texas during late April or early May would start to get very hot and many soldiers would not want to be wearing heavy wool. During battle most soldiers would be wearing their dress wool jackets(Santa Anna ordered them to be worn at the onset of the Alamo battle) if they had them but with the state of the Mexican army at this time it is very likely that at the Alamo and San Jacinto that a few soldiers were wearing their fatigue uniforms. Especially when the Texians rushed the barricades at San Jacinto since the Mexican army had retired from the field for the day and everyone was practically at siesta. The Mexican army would not have marched to San Antonio in their full dress uniform. They were also suppose to get a blue linen udress uniform with red facings, so they either wore this uniform or the white fatigue.
