Profile Map

InfluencesI have certainly been influenced by more wonderful (and terrible) people, music, literature and thought than I could name here, but here follows a list, in no particular order, of people who continue to amaze and inspire me:

Bruce Springsteen
The Clash
The Pogues
Billy Bragg
Bob Dylan
Mischief Brew
Against Me!
The Riot Folk Collective
Phil Ochs
Tom Petty
Flogging Molly
Andrzej Stepien
Tenacious D
The World/Inferno Friendship Society
Streetlight Manifesto
The Gaslight Anthem
Louis Barabbas and the Black Velvet Band
Defiance, Ohio
Elvis Costello
The Jam
Mark Steel
The Mountain Goats
Suicide Bid
The King Blues
King Prawn
Bertrand Russell
Sonic Boom Six
Woody Guthrie
Joe Hill

And lastly, and most importantly, my incredible backing band, The Dole Queue, without whom I draw ever closer to the iniquities of self-pitying James Bluntery.
Sounds Like"Incredible...the songs are amazing." - Itch (The King Blues)

"Accomplished, gripping and in this day and age, entirely refreshing" - Manchester Music

"Sensational songs about present issues...Baker's views are as daring and diverse as a St. Trinian's trip to Tynemouth...should be in the top ten of everyone's ipod" - Sandman Magazine

"Al Baker is...possessed with urgency and a righteous anger, but manages to distil it into a collection of upbeat and spiky originals...vibrant, intense and most welcome" - Rock 'n' Reel Magazine

"Baker is an intelligent lyricist, marrying the poetic honesty of Bob Dylan with the social conscience of Joe Strummer." - Rock Out With Your Wallet Out Zine

"There’s a smile to the sound, just as wide as the fist to the stomach is hard." - Chris Long, BBC Manchester

"Radical folk singer extroadinaire...a good showman" - ListenTo Manchester

"Hard hitting lyrics so well penned they would make TV Smith proud with a wry humour that even the most jaded revolutionary can’t help but smile at...despite the reminders that this world’s pretty much fucked you can’t help but feel uplifted as you listen" - That's Not Skanking Magazine

"He's like a white Elvis Costello" - A Sound Engineer in London

"A passable human being" - Andrzej Stepien

Here is a short video featuring myself, Dave Hughes, Tragical History Tour (Derrick Johnston) and Roscoe Vacant as we try very hard to explain to the good folks at whatsurmusic.com exactly why we do what we do.

Apologies for being spammy Al, but just to let you know that myself and the Pope proudly announce the release of my second album, Murder Music, out now on Cherryade Records.

Murder Music

"Prepare yourself to be modestly outraged - McCabe is kicking against the pricks, and declaring homosexual cliche's bankrupt" - Artrocker

"If you like punk, you'll love this. If you're queer and like punk, you'll spunk your pants. Ste McCabe is authentic and brilliant." - Boy George

Yeah yeah of course!
At the moment i'm not even sure if i'll use it! It's just a debate I'm very interested in and I've written a little bit about on my blog. At the moment I'm just collecting artists views and stuff and will probably blog about it again, it's just that i'm writing it for anyone, so i don't really have a deadline. So don't expect me to get anything back to you anytime soon!

hey there
mind if I quote you on your thoughts on music piracy?

I'm writing a response to Lily Allen and other members of the 'Featured Artists Coalition', but mostly her as it annoys me that she'd still be rich because of her dad even if she'd never sold a record in her life.

plus I reckon you'd interested, so please get back to me.
Steven.

hey, sorry this is kind of like spam, but we're trying to move off of myspace and we created a website. it's pretty basic but i think it's cool. spreading the word would be great but don't feel obliged to do so. we'd just like everyone to know.
