REVIEW : MELBOURNE FOLK CLUB May 9, 2009
Last Saturday was an outstanding success for the club with a full house for the Alanna and Alicia Egan Band.
I had only listened to their “myspace” after being told about the band
by a friend, and I could see they were good but had never heard them
live. (That shows you I don’t get out much)
On the strength of this I booked them.
Was I in for a pleasant surprise! The songs were well crafted by
Alanna and Alicia and when you hear them live, the quality shines
through. Their performance was wonderful and the ease with which
they sang their songs told me there was a special bond between the girls.
Amy Bennett was great with the three-part harmonies and also
fiddle and piano, and Liam O’Connell played very nice guitar. They were cheeky, adventurous, funny and commanding.
They are a joy and a must see for anyone who thinks, listens, laughs and sings.

Thoughtful prose that shows these girls have a humour that stays familiar enough to get close to, with a clever perspective on the age-old problem of love

This is a superb song both musically and lyrically. Cleverly crafted to grab the ear and stay there, it has a wonderful jazz feel and a 'take no prisoners' attitude that will have the lounge lizards squirming. This writer has something to say worth hearing.

Twin sister singer/songwriters Alanna and Alicia perform original, acoustic songs with poetic, insightful lyrics which command a close listen. Sweet sibling harmonies enrich their folk/jazz/blues style and imaginative, subtle instrumentation is provided by Amy Bennett ( piano and strings) and
Liam O'Connell / Justin Bernasconi (guitar and bass).
As identical twins they share a uniquely intuitive, creative partnership. They have a natural musical rapport, harmonizing effortlessly with one another, and they are each other's chief editors and collaborators.
The band performs around Melbourne eg. Northcote Social Club, Wesley Anne, Clifton Hill Hotel, Bar 303, The Artery , Edinburgh Castle, Ruby's Lounge, The East, The Empress. They have also played the various festivals including Port Fairy, Maldon, The Basin, Melodica Acoustic and Darebin and the folk clubs eg. Selby, Burrinja Ranges, Bendigo, Melbourne.
They have shared the stage with many talented acts such as Madviolet (Canada), The Waifs, Jeff Lang, Clare Bowditch, Lloyd Speigel, Alex Burns, Jordie Lane, Tinpan Orange, Rosie Burgess, Tim McMillan, Jetty Road and The Hazelman Brothers.
Their independent, debut album, ‘Funny she’s so much like me’, with eleven original tracks was launched in September 2006.
They were excited to receive a Vic Rocks Arts grant to record their second album which is due to be released later this year.
Alanna & Alicia have had considerable recognition for their songwriting.
Both girls have been finalists in the Australian Songwriting Association awards - Alicia 2009, and Alanna had a song in the Top 10 Acoustic section earlier. Alicia won The Basin Music Festival Songwriting Award 2009 and was a finalist in the Darebin Music Feast songwriting award 2009, Maldon F F 2008 and was Best New Talent at Port Fairy Folk Festival in 1998.
Both girls have reached the Lawson/Paterson Songwriting Final at the Port Fairy Folk Festival on several occasions and both have been runner up in the Roddy Read Songwriting Award at the Maldon Folk Festival and Alanna was runner up at the Darebin Music Feast in 2007.
They have played live to air on a number of radio stations including 774 ABC (Derek Guille), RRR and 3CR.
Their album is being/has been played on a number of radio stations eg RRR, 3CR, Fresh FM, JOY FM, and ABC Central Vic where it was recently the Album of the Week.
A recent critic described their work as ‘timeless and delivered from the heart.’
