Pretty soon, I believe, that we're going to have to rely on music to, uh like, get some kind of peace of mind or satisfaction... direction actually. More so than politics. Because politics is really an ego scene. That's the way I look at it anyway... It's the art of words, which means nothing. DOWN & DIRTY ROOTFUNK / Y2K-COMPATIBLE RIOTBLUES
Pohjois-Amerikassa syntynyt, nykyisin Helsinkiläistynyt Blues-kulkuri varustautuu keikoille resonaattori kitaralla, pullonkaula- slidellä, mikrofonilla ja repullisella tuhtia tunnetta ja asennetta.
Kalasen esittämä musiikki on tuore ja raaka versiointi vanhasta Delta Bluesista, johon sekoittuu vahvoja vaikutteita mm. Hip Hopista, Grungesta, Funkista, Punkista ja jopa Dubstepin maailmasta.
Helsinkiin saavuttuaan Kalanen perusti DJ Hereill:n kanssa Euroopassa ja jopa Japanissakin asti kiertäneen ”The Soul Hustlers” –bändin. TSH yhdistää keikoillaan innovatiivisesti DJ:n tarjoamat rytmit, ja akustisen laulun ja kitaran.
AK esiintyy keskimäärin 100 kertaa vuodessa ja hänen ”Back Catalogue” sisältää keikkoja monilla Suomen legendaarisimmilla klubeilla ja festivaaleilla kuten; Tavastia, Nosturi, Bar Mary, YO-Talo, Liberte, Faces Ethnofest, Klubi, Turku Jazz, PuistoBlues.
AK:lla on myös ollut residenssit Ravintola Helsingessä sekä Tampereen Konttorissa. Uusia residenssejä on työn alla nytkin Helsingin yöelämässä.
AK on kiertänyt mm. Don Johnson Big Bandin ja eestiläisen Bullfrog Brown:in kanssa, sekä valloittanut Baltian maat muutamaan otteeseen Tampereen omien folkpunkkareiden, Jaakko & Jay:n kanssa.
Edellä mainittujen lisäksi AK on esiintynyt ja tehnyt yhteistyötä lukemattomien artistien kanssa kotimaasta ja ulkomailta. Tässä mainittakoon muutamia:

This Helsinki-based blues singing drifter always knew he had deep roots, he just took his time figuring out where to plant them. Armed only with a bottleneck slide, a resonator guitar, no turntables and a microphone, and driven by musical
influences as scattered (hip hop, delta blues, grunge, funk, punk, dubstep..) as the places he's performed (Japan, Belarus, Nigeria..), Kalanen found his voice on the frozen streets of Finland, shouting blues songs recorded eight decades ago into the night. He went on to put together an innovative hip hop / delta blues collaboration with DJ Hereill, formerly known as the Soul Hustlers.
Kalanen's raw energy and knack for revitalizing an often overlooked style of music, in an era of digital pitch correction and
technologically assisted precision, caught the attention of Finland's premier live act Don Johnson Big Band, as much as esteemed blues artists like Estonia's Bullfrog Brown. Alaska was soon touring extensively with both, while continuing to perform solo on some proper stages and the street corners nearby. He regularly circulates stages, bus seats, and Viru Valge bottles across the Baltics with Tampere folkpunkers Jaakko & Jay. AK has also performed with the following distinguished artists: Jay Sinister, Petteri Sariola, Felix Zenger, Conscious Youths (Paleface, Redrama, Mr. Singh), DJ Neveready, Drunks with Knives, Janna, Jaska Prepula, Maxwell Eaton, Stefan G., Frankifier, Emma Salokoski, Pekka Kuusisto, Gabro, Maz, Staffro, Polar Soul, Jo' Buddy, Wille Granö, Tõnis Kärson, and Pille Siht. There he was grateful to meet activists fighting for justice in the oil-rich swamps of the Niger Delta. Alaska's travels have shaped his style into something like an acoustic DJ - fresh and uncompromisingly original soundscapes & grooves backed by a lyrical message that fits the same description.
AK rejects the label of entertainer. Entertainers don't bleed from their fingers when they've had a good show. Like the preaching blues players of the 1920’s, by way of Jimi Hendrix, Alaska makes music that kills apathy, not boredom.
