Influences
"This trio's reverb-drenched indie rock slims down the epic gestures of shoegaze and post-rock to arrive at a tense, frantic and loud approximation."
- Kevin Foster Langston, Free Times
Sounds Like
we don't play music together anymore
"Taking its cues from the darker recesses of indie rock's canon, a hint of shoegaze and several generations of post-punk, Columbia's Alaska the Tiger juxtaposes its staccato rhythms and melodic bass leads with a terse, double vocal attack. The sound is nervous and agitated with down-stroked guitars and consistent, driving percussion." -Eric Greenwood, Free Times
we broke up
"The Columbia, SC outfit makes college rock in a college town — slacker vocals and buzzy guitars see to that. But this group doesn't just stick to pop tropes. With its sludged chords, abstract lyricism, and tangents so sloped they require calculus, Alaska minors in math rock." Editor's review, download.com.
"...darkly infectious..."Honey Badger" has been my MySpace.com addiction for weeks, owing to its tense and propulsive channeling of vintage Mission of Burma and the fact that the bass line absolutely kills."
-Eric Greenwood, Free Times
"'So loud you can't hear us' is the motto of these Columbia locals, and if you haven't caught them around town, you can hear for yourself on this album just how amped the volume is. Of course, you'll have to envision that ten times louder for the effect of a live performance, but I digress: Now We're Familiar sounds dark and brooding on the first couple of listens with its distorted vocals mixed down to the level of the guitars. Almost in spite of itself, natural melodies emerge not just in the epic opener "Willy Loman" but also in "Honey Badger," the most approachable song of the lot. "Louder" may be the best tune though, more representative of the group as a whole and feedback-as-song in its finest form. Get familiar for your own benefit, my friend." - Patrick Masterson, WUSC-FM Columbia
"Like a fuzzy stuffed animal." -Otis Taylor, The State
