The brainchild of Argentinean singer songwriter Silvia Demetilla, alasVALS are a folk/fusion alternative-tango collective based in London and Buenos Aires.
The core members joining Silvia are David Aguirre –based in Argentina- who controls the programming and instrumental arrangements, violinist Natalie Sedgwick – with her beautiful and sensitive approach to the songs- and flute player Therese Bann –who describes herself as “between classical, jazz, world, ambient and anything in between as long as it's got soul” - + guest musicians.
Virtuoso percussionist and founding member Nando Gómez sadly died in 2008, but his inventive use of eclectic percussion lives on through their recordings, especially 2008's “Felicidad Equidistante”, which is dedicated to him.

Words alasVALS use to describe themselves include folk, experimental-tango and ethereal, and as they also take influence from films, their music can also be described cinematically, as soundscapes or audio landscapes.
***************************************************************
alasVALS use an eclectic range of instruments including violin, flute, melodica, ocarina, synths, rainstick, Indian tablas and odd percussion instruments, which are then mixed with electronic samples and melodic beats. Switching between English and Spanish the lyrics have a very delicate, clear voice, suited to the poetry they sing and play. Their lyrical influences include reflections on emigration and personal poetry about "inner life".

Since 2004 alasVALS have played in different venues around London including Bolivar Hall, The Spitz, Chelsea Arts Club, The Troubadour, Novas Contemporary Urban Centre, The Electro Acoustic Club, Café Bohemia, Notting Hill Arts Club, Canning House, Inferno’s and Café 1001, to name just a few.

ECTOGUIDE.com
“After releasing a promising ep alasVALS strike out with a full-length album of languid electronic bliss. Aguirre's inventive arrangements prevent them from falling into complacency and the warmth of Silvia Demetilla's voice is always there to elevate the songs. If Morcheeba has retained their early promise they might have made this album. "Veo Veo" was on the ep and is still a delightful, slow song. "Pearls" is dreamy and Demetilla's vocals are put to good use. "Ways to the road movie" buzzes with quiet dread and would make an ideal soundtrack song for a thriller. The experimental "Abnormal Puzzle" from the ep is a good track to revisit. This is a stunning and rewarding full-length debut. The electronic pop stylings are well-handled and the vocal is delightful. It recalls Morcheeba's chilled calm and maybe a bit of Björk's eccentricity in the vocal department. "Veo Veo" is supremely languid trip hop. "Abnormal Puzzle" is intriguingly odd, an avant pop experiment with a spoken word bit that fits and a nice backdrop.”

Magazine El colectivo- London
“Rather tan adjusting to the Argentine stereotype alasVALS –an atmospheric group influenced by tango, trip hop- jazz and experimental pop- has taken and transformed London’s life influence in a creative way. This is not only because sometimes they sing in English and Spanish, it is also because their songs have something nostalgic and a winter feeling. A real discovery for people that like Portishead, Bjork or Regina Spektor”.

“The lyrics of alasVALS talk about the human being and controversial situations in life. alasVALS is a mix of trip-hop, jazz and alternative pop. Here you have a band that inspires calm and peace with a very sultry voice ".

CHILDREN SONGS @ PWL OPEN STUDIOS: When Silvia's daughter was one year old (Dec' 06) she produced a CD with children songs as a gift for her. It was a touching experience... Now the band has been asked to produce two children songs for a compilation of Latin American artists in London organised by Pro Peruvian UK and BBC Children in need. The songs were recorded at PWL Open Studios, and you can see the pics on this web.
Again in 2009 alasVALS recorded another children songs for a project leaded by Pro Peruvian Art UK - Yacurunas-.
