The time and place of birth of jazz cat Albanie "sweets" are shrouded in mystery, though some jazz historians claim she was born on the fourth of July, 1900 in New Orleans, Louisiana. What IS known of her is that she lived an adventurous life, travelling the world, playing and singing hot jazz, and having scandalous love affairs wherever she wandered.
Legend has it that when she was fifteen years of age, she went down to the crossroads and sold her soul to a gypsy man in exchange for the ability to make hot jazz. As it turns out, Albanie had tricked the gypsy into thinking she'd given him her soul, but it was really just a box full of old, moldy clarinet reeds, and rusty broken guitar strings. So off she skipped to begin playing this exciting new music in the swingin' joints of Storyville, soul intact.
During this time she played with, and had scandalous love affairs with many jazz greats, including Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Dodds, Kid Ory, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Pops Foster, and Sidney Bechet.
One drunken night at the Funky Butt Hall, Albanie got word that Storyville was about to be shut down. With a tear in her eye she bid Storyville a tender "I'll be glad when you're dead, you rascal you!" and hopped on the next boat to Paris, France. During her stay in Paris, Albanie spent her days playing with, and having scandalous love affairs with Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelly, Josephine Baker, Sidney Bechet, Nin Nin Reinhardt, Louis Vola, Edith Piaf, and many many others, up until her mysterious disappearance somewhere in the 40's. Where did she go?
It's been said she was dancing through the streets of Paris one night wearing only a yellow tutu when she fell into the Seine river and drowned. Others say she drowned in whiskey and heartbreak. Still, i've heard that she died of a caravan fire.
But wait! There have been recent rumors of sightings of this hepcat in the city of Austin, Texas......the live music capital of the world. Perhaps Albanie lives, or perhaps it is her ghost lingering around these jazz joints where she was spotted. One never knows do one?
One thing is certain, however. So long as there is hot jazz in the world, Albanie will be hanging around, man...... dig?
